Just sent in 7 cards for the .5 bump review... what do you think will get upgraded? RESULTS ARE IN:

I picked out a few of my nicer looking 7s and 8s to see if any are worthy of a bump.

The two 7s I picked look a little under-graded to me, and compare pretty well to other 8s in my collection.

IMHO, the two 7s should at least get 7.5s (but getting full grade bumps to PSA 8 would not be a shock), and the PSA 8s should all get bumped to 8.5s. I think the 63 Cepeda looks like a good candidate for a PSA 9.

The '63 Marichal is the only one that might not make it. Looking at just the scan, it appears appropriately graded, but best of luck on all them.

great looking cards , I say you get 1 bump, maybe 2.

65- Morgan- No, too much corner wear.
    65- Carlton- Yes, looks strong
75- Brett- Yes, only 1 print dot on the whole card that is distracting. perfect centering.
62- McCovey- Maybe, Microtouches on corners may not allow it higher.
63- McCovey- No, this card is razor man but the print dots and centering don't allow it higher IMO.
63- Marichal- No, card looks a little soft on lower left.
63- Cepeda- Yes, centering may keep it back but it is beautiful.

Out of 7 I think you get 3 to 4 bumps.

The corners on the 62 McCovey hold it back, but the others all appear to have a shot.

I would upgrade all except 65 Morgan & 63 McCovey. I don't see any problem with the 63 Marichal, I say you get the "bump".

I think all have a legit shot. I think 5 out of 7. Good Luck. Those are what .5's should look like. You might get the bump on all of them.

Super nice cards! I'd say yes on the last 3 - on the Marichal, only if the upper right corner is strong (tough to tell from the scan).

Brett and maybe one other, perhaps the Marichal or the '63 Fleer Cepeda.
Think of the .5 as a reverse qualifier for exceptional centering, and realize only about 15-20% of cherry picked cards get bumped (so far), you realize there is often little incentive to resubmit.

Too late. The cards are already off to PSA.

They're going in under the 10 day service, so we should see some results by the 19th.

Hmm, the cert#'s for each of these cards no longer show up when you do a cert verification on them. I wonder what that means?

I think that happens to all cards that get resubbed. If they bump new certs are made, if they do not the old one gets used again.

I'd bet on the Morgan, Maricial, and Brett (in that order).

    Nice cards overall.

Brett for sure. Cepeda and Marichal also have a chance. Good luck!
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • Carlton, Brett and 62 McCovey look bumpable to me. 62 Mccovey is a special card for me. It was the last card I bought to complete my first childhood set. Cost me $28.00 at the time.1984? Probably in PSA 7.0-7.5 range. Good luck and let us know what happens.
  • They all look beautiful, but I think 4 will get the .5 bump. Hopefuly you will get all 8 bumped, but you should definetly expect 4 of them to bumb up! image

I'm pretty jazzed about these results...

Line # Item # Cert # Grade Description Type Country
    1 1 60091916 NEAR MINT-MINT+ 8.5 1962 TOPPS 544 WILLIE McCOVEY Card US
    2 1 30755910 MINT 9 1963 FLEER 64 ORLANDO CEPEDA Card US
    3 1 50069315 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1963 TOPPS 440 JUAN MARICHAL Card US
    4 1 03708384 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1963 TOPPS 490 WILLIE McCOVEY Card US
    5 1 31865250 NEAR MINT 7 1965 TOPPS 16 ASTROS ROOKIES J.MORGAN/S.JACKSON Card US
    6 1 31794757 NEAR MINT 7 1965 TOPPS 477 CARDINALS ROOKIES F.ACKLEY/S.CARLTON Card US
    7 1 30987573 NEAR MINT-MINT+ 8.5 1975 TOPPS 228 GEORGE BRETT Card US

2 .5 bumps, and 1 full grade bump, booyeah!

I'm interested to see what the notes will say about why the others didn't get bumps. My guess is...

Morgan and Carlton = corners (maybe centering on the Carlton)
    63 McCovey = print dots
    63 Marichal = centering

<<I'm interested to see what the notes will say about why the others didn't get bumps. >>

Perhaps I've been in a cave for the past several months but . . . am I to understand that PSA is informing people as to why their card(s) did not receive a higher grade? I thought I read somewhere else that a submitter received feedback on why his cards did not bump.

    Thanks,

    Tom

P.S. Nice job on the upgrades!!!
  • How in the world did that 62 Mccovey get a .5 bump with all the white on the tips of the corners showing?
  • digicatdigicat Posts: 8,551 ✭✭
The 62 McCovey looks like it was just pulled from a pack in 1962, crisp surface, great color, gloss, etc. I guess the grader considered it "high end" for it's grade, which is what I think as well.

I paid a + price for it in the 8 slab last year. I wonder what an 8.5 would pull?

Hey congrats, I did call all three and would of given you the Carlton as well. The overall eye appeal on your 62 McCovey is what sold it probably. Congrats on the whole bump for the Cepeda it is razor.
