How To Report Varieties

I believe David Halll's decision on varieties is a good one. I agree that there were mathematical problems with some of the suggestions which were otherwise well intentioned. Why not implement the decision this way:
Right now on the main page for each set there are two listings: All-Time Finest and Current Finest. Why not just expand that to make it four listings:
All-Time Finest (Including Varieties)
All-Time Finest (Excluding Varieties)
Current Finest (Including Varieties)
Current Finest (Excluding Varieties)
For each listing you would list all sets registered under that category, but the various statistics (Grade Points, % Complete, %RD or whatever and Set Rating) would be based ONLY on those coins appropriate to the listing. That is, the statistics would include varieties or exclude them. Someone, for example, could be 100% complete with a grade average of 66.52 excluding varieties, and 90% complete with a grade average of 66.22 including varieties.
My preference would be to see everyone’s set included under BOTH the listing including varieties and excluding varieties. If someone were not interested in varieties, they would simply consult the listings that excluded them. I just think it simpler for everyone if any set were included in both kinds of listing. However, you could give an owner the option to choose whether to be, or not to be, included in both types of listings. Let’s see how everyone feels about that.
I suggest this is preferable to having to go to separate screens for the set listings that include varieties and exclude varieties. And it would save someone who wanted to compete in both sectors the trouble of listing his set twice! Some additional points:
Perhaps you should make the page simpler by eliminating owner’s comments on this screen – I think that a more logical place to put a comment is with the issue-by-issue listing of someone’s coins (and no detail – no chance to comment).
I wonder if this isn’t an opportunity to see if registry set devotees really have an interest in keeping the All-Time Finest lists. Some forums have pointed out there are redundancy problems, when a set is sold and most of it relisted under another name.
For each individual set, show statistics such as Grade Points, Completion, Current Rating and Set Rating on both bases: including varieties and excluding varieties.
I hope all are happy with the decision.
