Impulse buy... what did I just purchase?

I liked the color of this halfpenny, although I'm not sure if it's one of the contemporary counterfeits of the era. What are the diagnostics?

Something funky going on with the last digit in the date...

Indeed, something funky goin' on with the date, there, but it looks like a genuine regal issue to me and not a contemporary counterfeit.

Diagnostics? I can't name off any specific ones, but it's usually quite apparent.

To me, the relatively high relief argues in favor of genuineness.
That may be what caught Rob's eye as well.
I have easily a half-dozen contemporary counterfeits of this type and
aside from some weird lettering and numerals in the legends/date, they
tend to be look sorta flat with respect to strike. Yours looks great!
We'd have to see more of a close-up of that exergue in order to
venture some guesses about what happened to the last numeral in the date.
What's the opposite of a filled die? A blob?
    Best to all ~

    Yeah, it will be interesting.

Pictures can always lie, but the implication to me is an AU, possibly UNC by U.S. standards, and "EF" by British standards. Agree? Disagree?
  • Looks nice to me, and if you got it from "centles" it should look better in hand. His pics /scans always have that flat washed out look.
