1950 Proof Lincoln with exceptional strike

Hi, I am looking at a 1950 proof Lincoln with exceptional strike and might purchase the coin. But not being an expert -- or even a near-expert -- on proof Lincs I could use some help. What intrigues me about the coin is the extensive detail in the portrait with just about every hairline visible (poetic license used). No marks stick out, but this coin is in a capitol holder so a true examination is not possible right now.

It is the strike and the detail of the coin that is so intriguing. Ive seen other proof Lincs from this era which are mushy and lack significant detail. This coin has the detail, and really grabs your attention.

Question: is this the kind of coin that COULD get a high grade, OR are all 1950 proof Lincs well struck like this one apparantly is?

Your help is appreciated. cheers, alan mendelson

  • I've not seen a lot of early 1950's proofs with real strong strikes. They lack the strength of the modern issues. I've looked at ~50 1950 Lincoln proofs without finding one I'd like to own. From what I've read about early 1950's proof making process, they only got about 10 good strikes from each die before it was "worn". Sounds like you've located a nice one.

    If I found one in rich red rather than orangey, I'd buy it regardless of strike.

    Alan, the color of the coin is at least as important as the strike, perhaps even more so. Watch out for carbon spots, toning streaks or mellowing color. If it's well struck, brilliant, spot free and has even color, then it's worth getting. A coin like that could grade high, as long as the hairlines are minimal.

    Hi and thanks for the comments. The color of the coin is even and good -- a rich red but not a bright red. no carbon spots, no streaks. It really stands out. The issue is getting the dealer to break up the set -- or else buying the whole 1950 set. Not seeing the coin out of the holder still makes it a gamble, I know. cheers alan mendelson

    I currently own a 1950 PR67 Red Lincoln and the strike is exceptional.I'm waiting on another that I purchased off Ebay.The scan looked good,waiting to see it in person.There were few with good strike and color.Those do bring a premium and are sought after.According to the Heritage want lists,there are at least 14 people looking for a coin like mine at this time.The hair detail of course isn't all they look at for grade.I hope this helps.

    Registry 1909-1958 Proof Lincolns
  • Hello;

    Although I have had a nice registry set of Mint State Lincolns at one point - - I am not a expert on the proofs.

    I do have a very nice looking 1950 PCGS PR66RD if anyone is interested. Just make me a reasonable offer. The coin is nice and the color is NOT the "deep rose" color that I have seen on many. The fields are free of haze etc.

    Maybe Don could suggest a fair price - - since proofs are more his game.
