New Ebay boycott planned for May 1

This is an open ended boycott rather than the weekly one just concluded. The May 1 timing is related to the new feedback policy.

When someone comes up with an alternative, there won't be a need for these "boycotts".

There are many alternatives to ebay out there? It's just nobody wants to use them. Remember Yahoo Auctions? It was completely free and nobody would use it and it had to fold.

How hard is it for some of you larger seller to get your own auction license? I'm seriously considering
getting one here in Texas and setting up on proxibid.com. You can hold live auctions or do a eBay
    style timed auctions.

There is more action on proxibid than eBay. And, that's not a stretch statement either. The traffic is
    incredible.

Does one need to be a licensed auctioneer to do online auctions?

Also, I am unfimiliar with proxibid, what exactly is it?

When I started my "Boycott", I am not planning on going back. I am hoping to get rid of paypal too! I use to say "There is nothing out there, close to ebay" and it is probably right, but I am no longer bending over and taking what they dish out!! Just my personal view on ebay.

Arts, Antiques, and Collectibles category. B & M just held their live protion
of the just concluded auctions on proxibid.com

There's literally a 1000 or so individual auction cos. and liquidators on this site. They bring everything to the block. I guess there are about 20-30
coin dedicated auction houses from around the country listed on proxibid. Great place to consign. I picked Weaver auctions the first time out of MO.
This time I'm going with a company out of Ohio.

I tried Yahoo auctions at the same time I started using eBay auctions. Two of my first three purchases on Yahoo were bad and I never went back.

You can cry and run all you want, but for general type coin sales, e-bay cant be beat from the number of perspective buyers. I dont like the fee's either, but I can tell you I am staying, the profit margins are for real. E-bay knows this and they have a lock on the market, not just for coins but general merchandise and they are not going to worry about a few boycotters. In fact the week everyone boycotted, I loaded up and sold strong with less competition, profits were great, and on to the next week. if March 1 comes around and there is a boycott, He!! I might list twice as much!

A local freind of mine who runs an E-bay trading store here who sells everything else, (he brings me all coins that come in and i send him all the other collectibles, jewelry, etc) is reaping in profits you would not believe. Last month alone he made enough profit from e-bay just on scrap gold to cover his expenses for the brick store front for 1 yr!!!!!!

Just use conzip.com auctions they are fee free for the first year . and after that I think it's only 3.99 a month to sell as much as you want .

    How about the site

www.wensy.com as an alternative to ebay? I tried to ask about it last week in another thread and got no feedback

Seemed to have quite a few coins. It claims no fees... selling or buying.

Anyone used it? How well does it work?

What's their plan? Build a user base and start charging? There's enough disgruntled ebayers right now that I hope they have good server capacity!

Only half serious but this would be interesting - I think we should do a class action suit against them. Our listings were buried under a pile of fake listings that ebay put there. This made it harder for people to find our listings and resulted in a drop in sales for us. They took money from us so we could list our items and then they buried them with phony listings that competed against us. Bad-faith dealings.

I've heard a few alternatives mentioned here and there but no reports of people actually buying or making completed sales on them. Are there any alternatives that people have used successfully to buy/sell coins?

At least coinzip is dedicated to coins. Problem is, if too many alternatives are out there, it is likely that none will be viable. I think that for those who post on ebay, spending a moment to also post on coinzip, might save on the final value fees, if you are using the BIN feature. True auctions will need a little more buyer and seller support.

CoinZip seems to have very few listings, with many searches returning no results. Also many of the older coins that are listed are raw, indicating perhaps problem coins.

They should also take some time to make it a bit more professional looking. Graphics like the following aren't very confidence inspiring IMO:

    image

IMO, they need to make the site look more professional and attract a better selection of coins to sell. Probably get a few dealers to try them out for a while with higher quality coins to see if more / better coins can attract some more buyers. Right now I can't see a buyer wanting to spend a lot of time there due to lack of coins. I also can't see a seller wanting to put in the effort unless there is some incentive, given the extra work to list there and lack of buyers.

Unlike most of the sites out there, I want to hear what you like and dislike about CoinZip, give me a call 301-876-4849.

The site attracted .30,369 visitors in Feb 2008 (last month) I don't think that's too bad, the auction site only started Jan 18th 2008, its not even 2 months old yet.

There has been 86 items totaling $5,553.16 sold since 01/18/2008

Some of the highlights of items sold
    1831 Capped Bust Half Dollar O-119 ICG AU-53 $279
1879-S Raw Morgan Dollar Rim Toned $40
    1806 Bust Half Dollar O-109 R1 VF-25 $650
    2- 1887 NGC MS64 Toned Morgan Dollars $130
1954 NGC MS-65 Franklin Half Obverse toned $47.50
    1819/18 Capped Bust Half Dollar O-103a R4 VF35/EF-40 $150
    1813 Capped Bust Half Dollar O-107a R1 EF-45 $250
1818 Matron Head Large Cent $325
1886 Silver Certificate Martha Washington FR 220 $350
    1932 D WASHINGTON QUARTER AU 58 $675
    1936 D WASHINGTON QUARTER AU $75
    1818 Capped Bust Half Dollar O-111 R1 AU-50 $229
    1811 Capped Bust Half Dollar O-108 R2 EF-40 $125
    1828 Capped Bust Half O-121 $350
Twenty 2006 Silver Canadian Maple Leafs in orignal mint plastic! $440
    1808 Bust Half Dollar $350

And we are running monthly give Aways
The CoinZip user that lists the most auctions on CoinZip between 3-1-08 and 3-31-08 will receive a 1963 Franklin Half Dollar PCGS MS-65, value $50.00 according to the PCGS Price Guide. I plan on increasing the value of the item given away each month, I may even be able to give prizes to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th places, we'll have to see how things go.

Last month Benzcoinz won the prize for listing the most items.

If you think eBay's rules and fees are onerous, try Amazon.

    << <i>Overstock >>

Terrible realized values and, again, onerous rules.

    << <i>Teletrade >>

Zero control over the auctions, and settlement takes too long.

    << <i>ShopatHomeTV >>

    You're kidding, right?

    << <i>Coinzip >>

No traffic compared to eBay. I actually am planning to list some stuff there, though. But, it'll be my own stuff. I'm not going to risk the lower prices with my consignor's material.

The bottom line is that, for coins at least, nothing on the planet produces the results eBay does.

The boycotts are a joke. Individual sellers make their decisions based on economic factors. If the feedback issue ends up affecting economic considerations for some eBay sellers then it will have an effect.

Why don't you guys realize Ebay could care less if you use them for coin auctions or not?? There is so much fraud, misrepresentation, key- word spamming, etc., it is probably more of a headache for them than what it is worth for the small amount of sales. The BUYERS should boycott buying any coins on Ebay, THEN the sellers would go somewhere else...

They raise their fees to keep the top sellers that get them the revenues, and to get rid of the wannabe little guys. Not an uncommon business model!!!

I completed my first Amazon sale a few weeks back just to test it as an alternative to eBay. It wasn't a coin, but it's an option for those who sell more than coins and use Buy It Now. I figured I'd share my experience. The listing process was easy, since you build right off existing listings. The closing fees are higher, and shipping is pre-set (they issue a credit to cover shipping costs), but there aren't PayPal equivalent fees. It took about 10 days to receive payment into my bank account from the sell day. I ended up clearing more than I would have with eBay. I would probably use it again. Hopefully someone comes up with an option for coins. The only site that I can think of with the traffic and loyalty is CraigsList. Here are the details from my listing:

    Buyer's Price: $74.99
    Amazon Commission: ($7.54)
    Shipping Credit: $5.49
    Your Earnings: $72.94

I've been eBay-free as a buyer and seller for a couple of months now.

I've now purchased a few coins off coinzip and like it. It's a lot like Ebay without all the jerks but they do need a way to pay though paypal in the auctions and I haven't quite figured out how to leave feedback it seems like everything has to go though your own account tabs. They need a way to track auctions easy and to see what you bid on too IMO. But it's a start and I'd check it out, there's some good deals without all the bidding stupid money that happens on EBay which I've been on since 1997.

Does "viable" imply on the same volume scale as Ebay? I don't see that happening anytime soon but there are a lot of people with
their own websites that are selling coins and of course there is CoinZip and a few others out there as well. You can sell coins online
without Ebay, maybe it is not as easy but it can and is being done.
