1884 Canadian LC - 2 stamped in neck

I realize a $1-2 large cent isn't anything to get excited over, but I was just curious as to the purpose of the stamped "2" in her neck. Looks to have been done long ago, just wondered if this was typical for a counter or what the other use it might have been. Was this common or just someone with too much time on their hands?

I do not know much about countermarked coins, but that is cool. I have some that I am not sure of myself. I wonder if there are any catalogs for such? -Dan

The 1884 cent has two obverse types. Yours is obv 2.

Could be a collector wanted to permently identify this as obv2? image
