The Philadelphia Eagles claimed one of the NFL's top prizes on Friday - the first day of the league's free-agent signing period.
The Eagles signed Asante Samuel, the former New England Patriots cornerback who tied for the league lead in interceptions with 10 last season. The Eagles secondary had a combined 11 interceptions last season.
Philadelphia paid a reported $57 million over six years with $20 million guaranteed. The deal is comparable to the eight-year, $80 million deal that cornerback Nate Clements got from the 49ers last season.
"We regarded Asante as the No. 1 available free agent in the NFL," Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said.
• The New York Jets acquired three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kris Jenkins from Carolina for third- and fifth-round draft picks. The 6-foot-4, 349-pound Jenkins will move to nose tackle in the Jets' 3-4 defensive scheme.
After trading for Jenkins, the Jets came to terms with him on a five-year contract worth $35 million, including $20 million in guaranteed money. He played in all 16 games last season, but had only 2 1/2 sacks.
The Jets also traded linebacker Jonathan Vilma to New Orleans for an undisclosed draft pick, and signed defensive tackle Sione Pouha to a three-year contract extension.
• Detroit traded defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to Cleveland instead of Cincinnati, according to an Associated Press source. Detroit reportedly acquired cornerback Leigh Bodden
and a third-round pick from Cleveland after the deal with Cincinnati fell through.
Detroit previously was set to get Cincinnati's third- and fifth-round picks, a deal still posted on the Bengals' team Web site late Friday.
• Quarterback Derek Anderson agreed to terms on a three-year contract with Cleveland. The deal is reportedly worth $24 million and includes over $13 million in guaranteed money.
• The Miami Dolphins, who began the day with close to $40 million in salary-cap space, signed former Raiders quarterback Josh McCown to a two-year deal worth $6.25 million. He will compete with John Beck, the only returning quarterback. The Dolphins released Trent Green and did not bring back Cleo Lemon, who signed a three-year contract with Jacksonville.
The Dolphins also obtained defensive tackles Jason Ferguson (formerly of the Dallas Cowboys) and Randy Starks (Tennessee Titans); right guard Justin Smiley, who started for the 49ers; wide receiver Ernest Wilford of the Jaguars; tight end Sean Ryan, who has played for the New York Jets and the Cowboys; and veteran outside linebacker Reggie Torbor, who started in the Super Bowl for the New York Giants.
• Washington and quarterback Todd Collins agreed to a three-year, $9 million deal.
• Denver released wide receiver Javon Walker and lineback Ian Gold, according to the Denver Post.
• New England re-signed linebacker Tedy Bruschi, agreed to deals with long snapper Lonie Paxton and wide receiver Kelley Washington and released tight end Kyle Brady.
• Linebacker Kawika Mitchell signed a five-year contract with Buffalo, which cut veteran tackle Larry Tripplett.
• Atlanta re-signed quarterback Chris Redman and got a visit from free-agent running back Michael Turner, who has has rushed for 1,257 yards and six touchdowns in four years as a backup to LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego.
• New Orleans re-signed linebacker Mark Simoneau, who had 97 tackles last season, and defensive tackle Brian Young.
• Houston signed free agent receiver and kick returner Andre' Davis to a multiyear contract.
• Quarterback Billy Volek agreed to a three-year contract to return to San Diego.
• Jeff Wilkins, the Rams' career leading scorer and the best active long-range kicker in the NFL, announced his retirement after 14 seasons.

What is the status of Rickey Williams ?
<< <i>Speaking of running backs,
What is the status of Rickey Williams ? >>
He is still with the Dolphins but that could change at any time, Parcells has been doing a lot of wheeling and dealing and still
has holes to fill on the team and could trade him for another player along with some combination of draft choices etc. A lot of
possibilities out there.
