SMS Kennedy?

What do you think? Would these bu halves grade MS or SMS by PCGS?

This is a roll that my grandfather put away back in the 60's when he worked for the bank. They don't have that proof like finish like the ones in my SMA sets. Some of these have a lot of die polish lines and in general they look like crap. I don't know any other way to tell the difference.

There was a time when PCGS would label them all as SMS, period. Has anything changed?

    thats not true

PCGS slabs plenty of MS coins from 1965,66,67

it is just the top grade MS coins (MS 66,67,68) that look SMS
  • PCGS will grade MS but if the coin looks real good MS66 or better andit looks like it might have come from a Special Mint Set, they default to the SMS (course they won't say this).image

If you don't collect Kennedys, it might be better to sell the roll unopened to get the max value.image

Those will all BB cuz they are AT, it says right on the roll. image
MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.
  • I would say that they're all AT'd image

  • Sell them at melt. Its impossible to obtain better than a MS66 at PCGS on pre-1970 Kennedy halves.image

Seriously I would be fairly confident all 20 of those Kennedys will be MS as opposed to SMS. Someone would have had to have plucked a SMS coin from its set and place it in a roll. Its not unheard of considering I have found one 1967 SMS in a roll of circulated half dollars.

  • I was wondering how long it would take for the "AT" jokes to start. image

So it doesn't sound like things have changed much at PCGS? If it's gem or higher they will give it the SMS label but if it's a dawg they will give you the bennifit of the doubt.

  • 20?

Thar be 40 in that thar big ol' roll. imageimage

I had more in the 40 coin rolls but they were so old that most of the rolls fell apart. I put the ones without the paper rolls into square coinsafes.

Save your money; don't get them slabbed unless you have a truly amazing coin in there, which is doubtful. There are a ton of these halves available at less than melt.
