What say you?

Do the spots bother you?

Looks nice for the grade, close to what PCGS calls 65 BN. "Spots" are really just tiny speckles of darker toning, not carbon spots or other damage. Asking price is significantly higher than Bid, so it is being touted as a PQ example.
  • I think I would pass on that one the spots are a bit distracting. IMO of course.

yea, they bother me. nice coin except for the darker spots as a
    distraction.

I am normally anti-spot. However in this case, because the coin is quite dark and there is little contrast between the spots and the surface, I do not find them distracting.

Nice reverse, but the obv spots are a pretty significant problem. I have seen better coins in AU58, and lower MS grades, and for a lot less money than $475

  • The spots in the obv field don't really bother me, but the ones on the cheek do, however, the obverse of that coin
is very well struck, with the exception of a few areas. I love the reverse. A really nice coin. I attribute it as an N-21.
You need to decide if they bother you, that's what's important. And I think that since you asked us, they
    do bother you.

I'm with rheddon- it's more "speckled" than "spotted". Plus the specks look old, and are probably about the same age as the coin itself. Older, contemporary problems which have been with a piece through the years don't bother me as much.

Also, ask yourself if you are collecting coins or 5x or 10x or 20x images of coins. Take a look at the smaller image at the top of the page and ask yourself if the coin looks pleasing.

Judging by the images, I like the coin, and I bet it is quite pretty in hand.

  • As I am not in a buying mode on this particular coin, I can't give you an opinion on its worth at the asking price. But for your question on the spots, they are not spots that I would take against the coin, unless it is just the photo showing them in the best possible light. The "spots" tend to match the toning of the edge of the coin, and as some others have stated, don't distract like a carbon spot or such. I personally really like this coin. JMO.

Edited to add, as has been stated over and over here on this board, it is really what YOU think that matters if you are considering buying image

Nice detail, but the toning spots would bother me too much. I would pass.

The spots bother me on this coin, but they do not bother me on all coins.

  • I think the question with regard to the spots or speckles is what does the coin look like under normal light. I think it is a nice coin.

Thanks to all that replied. I ask opinions of others just to hear different perspectives. In general, I've made up my mind about a coin before I post it here. It's just that sometimes, someone will say something that I did not consider. That makes me re-evaluate my opinion. That's how I learn to make wiser decisions. I learn to see things from different perspectives.

Anyway, the spots on this coin do not bother me. I just thought they probably would bother most, and that's why I mentioned them. I think the price is a little too high, but I think the strike is VERY good. I, too, would like to see what this coin looks like in normal light.

This coin is on my mind as a "maybe" purchase. We'll see.
