Still think hi grade raw is not out there? read on
About a month ago my mailman (who is also a friend ) told me that his cousin passed away and that his aunt gave the sons cards to him.
He didn't say what years he had but said he had tons. Ok I'm thinking tons = 80's -90 crap. His cousin passed away at 64 making him born in 1943.
So tonite I arrived at his house to see what he had and as I walked into the room I saw what appeared to be 80's factory sets and as I was about
to say 'Oh no" He led me past them and then...............
....... my jaw dropped. In binders were runs of Topps and Bowman cards from mainly 1953 and 54. around 2000 cards all in near mint condition. He had some 52's and 54's too.
Mantles, Mays, Aarons etc etc etc. I would say that the bulk was 53 Topps and 53 Bowman. He had both colors and black and whites. Not many of those.
Of course many had centering issues, but they were in mid to top grade. Never played with.
So I explained to him about PSA, left him the current SMR so he could read up on it and when I get back from Florida he and I will be sending them in to get graded and then sell them
on ebay.
So, the next time anyone tells you that 50's raw isn't out there remember this thread.
The stuff is out there.

It was nice seeing the 53 Topps especially in what I thought were in grades 6 thru 8.

Are you going to be buying any of these for yourself?
Jake
No I won't be, I'll be doing the selling though. He offered me a 50 -50 split but i felt that was too much and told him
I'd take 35% and pay all the fees. So I'm hoping to clear 20% for my efforts. I need to use a different comp so i can get some nicer scans up.
I'm thinking it might be best to have my son buy a platinum membership that way i can send in any 12 cards
and get them back before I turn 63! Because if i send them in in a regular submission the fees will kill us.
It was funny on one page he would have 6 of the same player. Yet he had only 1 1953 Topps Mantle. He did have 3 or 4 1953 Bowmans though.
What do you guys think about using SGC? I assume the turnaround would be faster? PSA is where the money is at though I think.
Craig.........Sure will
Steve
Yea I personally would stick with PSA over SGC,It will mean more money for you in the end. Are you planning on sending all
2000 cards in for grading? If so I would think you could strike a deal up with PSA on a large bulk order.
P.S.
What condition would you say the 53' Topps Mantle was in?
The 53 Mantle I thought was a 7, Maybe a 7.5.
I didn't think about getting them all graded. I thought we would start off with the HOF's
then do the stars etc.
I was pretty overwhelmed seeing all those cards.
One thing though I told him to be very careful taking them out of the pages. And I left him 150 top loaders
i didnt want him trying to put them into card savers.
Storm i agree PSA = More money
It would be alot of fun if you post some raw pics of the star cards,Everyone can guess the grades on them,
Then see the final grade outcome from PSA.

I second that Wolfie.
Steve - before ya send them out - can ya provide a few scans of the better star cards?
This is very exciting - good luck with the upcoming auction after ya get the cards back.
I always like stories like this - made my day!

cards in my possesion <sp> and will scan them b4 I send them off to PSA. Then the waiting will begin.
I still think opening a new platinum membership may be the way to go. Especially for the Mantles and other cards valued over
500.00. I'll have to research this.

I also know that there are probably quite of few nice raw out there. Some of us old geezers just can't phantom sending a card in the mail to someone you don't know just to put a number on it. With that said ... I'm not one of 'em .... LoL ... mainly because when I was a kid we never thought to actually put them away and protect them.
I know an old boy .. actually only about 10 years older than I that had an Uncle that worked for Topps back in the day. His Uncle would send him set upon set every year up until around 1960. Although he has never actually seen a lot of the cards he has ......he has to have literally 10's of thousands of book value sitting in his home. You see ...... he never opened most of the sets that he received. I'm not totally sure what he has left but I do know that he has at least 4 unopened complete Topps '52, '53 and '54 sets and at least 2 from every other year up to 1960. He had told me he had 6 sets from every year but back in the 70's he got hard up for $ and basically sold some of them for nothing just to survive.
I asked him if he ever thought about cracking the '52's for the Mantles and having them graded and he just looked at me as if I were crazy. His thought was, that even if they graded high that wouldn't make them any more valuable to him than they all ready were....... ....
Sad part of this story is that he has been diagnosed with cancer and has been told he'll probably never make it to see '09. Not sure what will happen to his cards as he really doesn't have any close relatives left.
So as far as not too many high grade cards left around ....... if there is a gentleman in my small corner of the world with some ..... ya know there's got to be more!
<< <i>Indeed a nice read!

WOW. I guess you should get them!
Glad he did not find it!!
Funny you show that picture, not knowing what to expect last night I brought 5000.00
in hundreds with me. I wasn't sure what my friend was going to do or have for that matter.
