Should I send my coin to PCGS ?

RarityRarity Posts: 1,438 ✭✭✭✭
I've been keeping my $50 Revere proof in my pocket for the past few days, of course it's still in Mint capsule, and wondering whether I should send it to PCGS for grading. Should I or should I not ?

Under 5x magnification, the coin is flawless, no tick whatsoever. I love pulling it out once in a while for viewing.

It might be a bit more uncomfortable to carry around in your pocket if it's in a big old slab.

Paul Revere on a $50 Proof coin? I'd like to see that.

It really depends. Right now I would say there is little to no premium in the PCGS holder if you were to sell. There were a lot of 70's made so there is little premium on those too.

Platinum is now above issue price so you could easily save the $30 grading fee and just keep it in the nice box and capsule.

edited: if you intend to keep it for a long time and carry it as you have been then the mint capsule is easier to carry than a slab. People might question the bulge of a slab. image
  • If you plan on selling, by sending it to PCGS you will get substantially more if you think it has a chance at a 70.

There is absolutely no premium for a 70 grade anymore.

It's all just bullion these days.

Raw, slabbed as 69 or 70 or still in the mint box, proof or business strike, they all bring the same price.

That's just the way it is during this mad metals bull.

Not correct, while most 69's and other TPGS 70's sell for little or no premium, PCGS 70's (and some 69's) do sell at a substantial premium. A PCGS Reverse Proof Gold PR70 sells for ~$4,500. The same coin in a 69 or raw sells for ~$3,000. You would be much better off sending it in for grading if you think it has a chance at a PR70.

I wouldn't waste the money. The coin is what it is and if you like it, the Mint's capsule is sufficient to enjoy it, no?

Not if you plan on selling it, in fact the Reverse Proof has one of the largest premiums in a 70 vs a 69 image

Tell me where to sell them because I can get them for the bullion price alone at a couple of B&M shops right now. In fact I got a couple of one ounce gold PCGS PR70s for under spot just last weekend.

If they were PCGS 70's you definetly got a deal. On eBay even regular AGE Proofs PR69's sell at a premium above spot. I very seriously doubt you bought a Reverse Proof for spot from a dealer, if you did you need to go back image-
