1882-O/S Morgan Silver Dollar which has been certified authentic, attributed as VAM 4 EDS (Early Die State), and graded AU53 by PCGS.

Valued at $6,500 in AU by the good folks at VAMview.

What is it about this VAM that causes PCGS to put EDS on the holder? I know what EDS is, but why so much more important on this one?

Doug:

Early Die State; it means there's appreciably less of the underlying S than there is with later die states... and give us VAM geeks a discernably different coin to look for (especially if it gets its own separate VAM designation!) and we get all excited!

EDS also means the coin has some prooflike or semi-prooflike surfaces, which makes them easier to spot. The EDS versions of all three O/S varieties (VAMs 3-4-5) are significantly scarcer than the regular die state versions, but the VAM 4 EDS is in a class of its own and then some. There may not even be a dozen total examples discovered so far.
