PQpeace - My day - Bank, Liberty Coin, PCGS - Pedigree Finished !

I had decided last week to get a Pedigree on my Morgans when I found the last coin (1889cc). Thanks Bill Spears !
I took today off and went to my two banks to round up all my Peace and Morgan dollars.I had NEVER seen all 153 coins at the same time before today.I usually rotate them bringing home 10 per week.

I drove down to my favorite coin dealer, (Liberty Coin )in Long Beach and sat down with Jim Foster to decide on which coins had a good shot to upgrade.Jim has a GREAT eye for dollars, and has also worked at PCGS as a grader. These 123 Morgans and 30 Peace dollars were picked out of thousands of dollars I had looked at over the years.Out of all those I had looked at and purchased, about 22 Morgans and 7 Peace dollars were chosen to try and upgrade. These 29 dollars were also shown to many Dollar experts/dealers, and the majority of them agreed that they belonged in a higher grade holder.
It took me 4.5 hours to organize all the coins and make my choices before I drove them down to PCGS.

I left Liberty and drove to PCGS for the first time.
When I arrived,I was met by a guard who asked me who I was and what I was there for. After I was buzzed in,I was left in a private room and waited for someone to come in and take care of me.
Within minutes, a very nice lady came into the room and went over my invoices and special instructions.
After we were done,I asked if I could speak To Rick M.,knowing he is a real busy man.
He came right in, and we talked dollars for a few minutes.
He was very pleasant, and gave me the congrats for completing both sets.
I then left the building and drove home in the normal L.A. trafic.
It took me from 9:30 in the morning til 6:00 pm to take care of this fun chore.
I will let everyone know the results as soon as I know.
I have to say,PCGS really is # 1 in my book.Yes they have a few problems, but they are being worked on as we speak.I am sure Rick knows what needs to be done to keep PCGS #1.
Thanks for reading,
Larry

Would be nice to meet Rick personally and talk dollars for a while. I'll have to say I'm envious! Congrats again on the set and look forward to seeing the Shapiro name "in lights."

Good luck on the upgrades as I'm sure there will be a few with that "eye" of yours!

Thanks Guys..I am staying with Morgan and Peace dollars.38 years is just getting started image

I was only able to deliver my coins to PCGS because of the Value of the sets.I did not want to risk trying to replace these coins if they got lost in the mail.

No matter how safe your coins are, if you're like me, you'll be restless till they make it back home (or, in your case, the bank). True?

  • Awsome, great thread. It must of been a helluva feeling to see several years worth of work altogether at one time. My worst day of coin collecting still beats my best day at work. What a great day of "work".

    Hi Braddick,
I don't think I will worry about them at all.
I worry more when I get on an airplane image

  • Sounds like a great day! It sure would be nice to see all those dollars at one time. Then to really look at them all to pick upgrade candidates. I sure enjoyed looking at my type set when I had it all here and spread out on the floor.

Here's hoping to at least a couple upgrades!
  • Thanks for sharing your day with us - sounds like great fun!

    Good luck on your upgrades!

    Larry:

Thanks for the story, and congratulations on the accomplishment!

We all know what it is like to collect a few coins and add to our sets, but your story reminds us new collectors of some of the rewards that come about after years of searching and perfecting.

    Thanks and again, congratulations!

I did not know that you could drop off your coins directly at PCGS. Since I live on the L.A./Orange county line, I'd love to take my coins directly to them. I, also, visit Jim at Liberty Coins very often. He seems really down on PCGS and seems very bitter about them. I have a stack of coins I'd like to have slabbed, so Jim gave me his opinion on whether they will cross. What off-ramp do you get off at to go to PCGS?

    Hi Tom,
I think the only reason I was able to hand deliver my coins was:

It was every coin I own.153 different Morgan and Peace dollars.
I did not want to take any chances of them getting lost in the mail.

In any other case,I would mail my coins in.
    Hope this helps,
    Larry

Went to PCGS yesterday and picked up my Peace and Morgan collections.

All 153 slabs were perfect. No printing errors. They followed my special instructions with no problems at all.
I am very happy with the process. Thanks to Rick and his crew for a job well done.
Now if they would have only upgraded 5 or 10 more image

  • Larry,
I missed reading your post when it was orignally listed, but it sounds like a very interesting experience. Glad you have everything back and in good condition. Although I have only been collecting dollars for just over a year now I find it next to impossible to part with any of mine. Even when I upgrade one of my coins I still cling to the other, guess, its like a mother not wanting he children to leave home. If I would have know I would ahve been aflicted like this when I started I would ahve done it anyway.

Congrats on your coins and also for 100% in the Morgan set!!!!

    Take care and enjoy.
