Kudos to Julian

I know we hear a lot on these boards about dealers and much of it less than flattering image

well I thought I would give credit where credit is due, Julian really is a dealer that treats collectors right.

  • I agree. Wonderful to talk to at a show and treats everyone very nice. Everytime I get to a show and he is there he has no problem entertaining questions and seems very real.

    Good thread.

  • Got Pics? image

I have heard nothing but good things about him on here.

Julian is a class act...and along with a hand full of other dealers...he is a dying breed in the hobby.

  • He is just one of the good guys. All to often we hear of the bad ones. I like this thread and hope we get more like this. We need some praise instead of just negative.

He's quite close to being nonpareil. And, if you can grade coins, he has many raw gems to delight you into the wee hours.

I must concur even as a YN.

When I was at the MidAmerica Show in Rosemont, I would always pass his table because the coins he sold were way out of my league.
But I still liked to look at the coins in his case, and on this occasion business was slow and we started talking coins and it was really cool of him to do that.

I know Julian won't remember but I first spoke with him at the Dayton Coin Expo a few decades ago. I reintroduced myself to him at the ANA in Milwaukee. Real nice guy.

Julian is a great guy. And, as this thread is evidence, he has great brand recognition where just a first name is all that is needed.

nothing but praise here! julian is top notch and definately deals in top shelf coins that need no sticker to confirm their place in the hobby.....attitude is everything and i've always liked his view of this hobby, placing the collector at the center!

another characteristic that i repect is his stance on TPG's......they are merely another professional's OPINION of condition.....no more, no less.....he may agree with a TPG's grade or he may disagree and neither opinion carries more weight.....it's simply two numismatic professionals disagreeing (read: he doesnt drink the KoolAid, but he's far from a TPG basher either; a nice realistic balance)

in step with this, many of his website descriptions are heavy in description and rely less on numeric grades, which really tell you nothing of eye appeal.....i wish more dealers advertised their inventory in this manner

i purchased a nice pattern for my indian head collection from julian last may and have enjoyed the coin ever since!

Met him on the bourse in Long Beach a couple years ago. He made an offer on one of my coins that I thought was low, but actually suggested to whom I might take it that might pay more - then told me that his offer would stand no matter what happened. Now that is confidence - and class. image

Julian is a wonderful human being....met him in person at the Baltimore show last year.....will say hi to him at table 400(?) this year!!!

If you have not had the pleasure, it only takes 30 seconds to know that he is the real deal.

BTW, the first man you see as you walk into the BCC is............... you guessed it!!!

What? You wanted the kids to bring the tokens back to you in slabs....and CAC'd to boot, right?

Julian is first rate all the way. I haven't purchased from him in a while but he always takes the time to educate collectors no matter how big or busy the show. If you ever attend a major show be sure to stop by his table and say Hi, you are guaranteed to see or learn something new.image

  • I have not purchased a coin from him as of yet but I have seen him at I think 3 shows and he has spoke to me very kindly and with a smiling face every time. Seeing a person smile and greet you is almost as good as finding that special coin you need.

"So what has he done for you lately?"

I'll take a stab at that. I have known of Julian Leidman for nearly a quarter century now, both through his national advertising campaigns in the coin weeklies and from his presence at all large national shows. I must confess, however, that from a few brief perusals of his fabulous inventory at a couple of shows over the years, I developed the false impression that he only had very rare and/or high grade coins at high prices, most of which were out of my reach. I enjoyed looking at his inventory of gorgeous half dimes, but never purchased anything from him simply because his coins were, for the most part, too expensive for my budget. A visit to his table for me was like a visit to a museum, with fabulous coins, but not much for me.

That all changed recently thanks to a chance and fortuitous conversation I had with Julian at the 2007 ANA in Milwaukee last summer. I happened by Julian's table, and seeing that he was not too busy, I engaged him in conversation about half dimes, and particularly about possible AU and low MS examples that I collected. I found him to be most engaging, very professional, courteous, and eager to help. He admonished me not to avoid his table in the future, fearing that he might not have material in the grades I sought. He made the point that he, like most dealers, utilized his prime display case space, particularly at large and expensive shows, with his high end material, but that he had other material in boxes behind his table, much of which was the type of material I sought. He showed me a box of half dimes from which I purchased a gorgeous 1849/8/6 Liberty Seated half dime in raw EF-45 grade, with lovely pastel toning and strictly original surfaces. We spent a few minutes discussing my interests, and I pledged to stop by his table every time I saw him at a show in the future.

It is most refreshing to have a dealer of the caliber of Julian Liedman make eye contact with you as you pass, ask you what you are collecting, and engage you in conversation about your collecting interests, particularly on a large and very busy bourse floor. I would encourage others not to make the same mistake that I made, thinking that Julian only sells high end and expensive coins. He has a large inventory of "collector" coins, at reasonable prices, and has a lifetime of knowledge to share.

Here's one I bought from Julian when I was in college for $85 - a significant sum for me at the time. He had just purchased the Amazonian Set, but he took time to show a poor student coins that I could afford.

Roll the clock forward a few decades.... He is now working with my 10 year old YN, and making him "think" about the coins he wants to buy as he works on his "Littleton" quality circulated set of Walkers and his (with Dad's help) early American type set.

Every coin show promoter should put Julian right inside the front door, just like at Baltimore.
He is the best ambassador a promoter could hope for.
I can't imagine the oddball and inane stuff Julian has had to field as point man but, considering how he has treated me, I am sure he responded with respect and dignity.

Talked to Julian at the Dulles Coin show yesterday.

As usual he was very helpful, thoughtful, and above all cheerful.

    Thanks for the tips, Julian!!!!

I'll be buying or trading a coin with you in Baltimore!! image

    Nice coin and nice story.

Julian is top notch...I haven't bought anything from him in a while but that never matters when I see him in Baltimore or at his shop. He's always friendly and helpful and willing to just talk coins.

You guys are pretty funny. How can I ever get in the Democratic primary at this late date. When I was a wee lad, I did think about becoming a senator, but down and dirty politics is not for me.

If I were to run, I would run for the office and not against anyone. I only wish that big time politicians would run with that idea.

Again, many thanx to all for your kind comments.

  • I met Julian in 2006 when my college room mate and I were doing a documentary on coin dealing for his media production class. We selected several dealers to talk to: Dave Wnuck, Larry Stack, and Laura Sperber. When he saw us with the tape recorder, he asked us what we were doing and offered to assist. While everytime we tried to talk to Julian, he was engaged in business, it was very nice of him to offer his time to assist two college students in a project.

More recently, I have bought a few coins from him, and sold a few to him as well. He is always straight forward in his dealing and very reasonable.
