Help a new collector! - Best place to buy metals online?

Hello Everyone...

I am a lurker on these boards mostly (have posted before, but not too frequently), and I am a very new collector.

My question is this: what do you all feel is the best place to purchase precious metals from online?

Most of the bullion that I own now was bought as single coins off of ebay (I am a sucker for the beautiful silver and gold rounds produced worldwide). I am now looking to up my metal collection (have been waiting for a price dip for a while but am just gonna bite the bullet and do it now) and purchase metal bars in the 10 - 100 ounce range, and I am wondering if some of the mints are preferred over others? Does it really matter? Is it better to go out and check the coin shops in my area first?

From just doing searches on Google, I think my top choice now is NW Territorial Mint...their bars seem pretty nice looking.

Opinions and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Unless you live in Oklahoma and then they'll add tax to all purchases.

Lots of previous posts on this - you could try using the search function with some of the keywords.

I like AJPM, but there are plenty of others.

I have purchased from APMEX in past, and sent check to avoid the extra CC fee -- they delay shipment by two full weeks. I don't like sending large MO in mail.

Once they also sent me some oversized silver - unmarked coin - that I googled and could find absolutely no reference to - so I sent them back and they exchanged them for marked coins.

    Overall - I grade them an 8+

You have to watch what you buy - some of them are scratched, etc.

Affirmative! When purchasing bullion at or below "spot" or "melt" understand that you are buying the metal, NOT some coin of Numismatic Value.

Scratched. dateless, totally worn/ featureless ..... is what you should expect.

Under these conditions you are buying METAL (as you have stated), not nice coins - though sometimes ........

Unless you live in California and spend more than 1K. No tax over 1K in metal or coin purchases.
  • AJPM and APMEX are both good places to deal with. As for NWT Mint..... Thier product is A+ and looks great....Butttt...be warned, it can take 6 weeks OR MORE to get your order.

I like the look of AJPM...are their silver bars from the Wall Street Mint as their picture implies? Do the bars come packaged in plastic wrap?

Please let me know! May place an order with them this afternoon. Thanks!

Also, try Liberty Coin in Lansing, Michigan.

These are great guys and straightforward, whether you are buying or selling.

Coined bullion offers some safety over bars, as bars can be hollowed out and the precious metals replaced with lead or other cheap metals. I'm not aware of many counterfeit bullion coins, but they could exist. Coins/bullion are more liquid than bars in my experience.

    Good luck.

If taking gold delivery I recommend these guys (free delivery on 10 or more oz.)
    Only Gold

If just investing in the metals I recommend the Kitco Pool Account where they hold the metal at no additional charge (makes it easy to trade often with no additional expense of returning the metal to the buyer). I have been having good fortune with the paladium.

I really like the international silver and gold rounds. I've collected them (as much as I can afford) for the past few years strictly for their aesthetic appeal and not as an investment. Now, as I have a little more disposable income, I'd like to make a few larger dollar metal purchases to sit on for a while...the way I see it, there is a finite amount of metals in the world, making it difficult for prices to decrease over extended periods of time...

So, I guess in response to your question, I collect the coins and would like to start investing in the metals!
