We read recently about the turmoil at ANACS and ICG and the revolving door through which graders switched from one firm to another. Then we heard about the problems that PCI has been having, and how it got scooped up by DLRC.
If I were in charge of those grading firms, I would very, very quietly start to buy up the mistake coins, and possibly even the accurately graded coins that are still floating around the marketplace. Then, I would ensure that the coins are of a consistent grading quality, and release them back to the marketplace. I don't know what will happen to prices as this is done, but over the long term, the brands of each of these services will probably have enhanced value.
Do you think that now is the time to start to scour the bourse for these slabbed coins, and make opportunistic purchases before things tend to be taken off of the market. I figure that these coins sell at a discount right now, and once the brands get in order, the coins will trade closer on par with PCGS and NGC (or at least not at such steep discounts). What do you think of this strategy? Is this something that I should employ at Baltimore (which would be more of a challenge than just looking at sticker slabbed coins which are guaranteed PQ)?
