Looking for help on this 1809, '8 Skilling' coin??

Seeking the history of this coin.

It has "8 Skilling, Skille Mynt, 1809, I.G.P." on one side
and on the other a large 'R' with a crown on top and
below that 'VI.'

Also wondering about the fact that the word "Skilling"
cuts off, with the letter G only half showing. Was the
coin originally made this way, or has the edge been
worn down on that part of it?

Thanks for any responses!

    Norway, 8 skilling (1/2 mark), 1809-IGP. KM277. .375 silver/.0329 oz.
    Mintage: 1,350,000.
    4th edition cat.= $5.00 VG, $10.00 F, $20.00 VF, $50.00 XF.

I would grade your coin a strong VG or a low-end Fine, personally.

I don't think it's cut down, but it could've been struck on an undersized flan, I suppose.

It's not that unusual for coins of this era to be somewhat crudely struck, with letters partially off the flan, and so on.

I'm pretty sure Rob is right. The edge gets very worn on these beause they were basically "flat" when mented. No raised edge.

    Just a ps:

That coin, in the grade it looks to be would bring more than the equivalent of $50 on the Scandinavian auction here

Speaking of Norway, look who just showed up! Hi, Wayne! How are things in Norway?

This one had me stumped for a second. Tried Denmark first, and found the monogram was right, but no coin matched. Then I went to Sweden... all wrong. So I tried Norway, and bingo. I was confused as to why the monogram of Frederik VI of Denmark would be on there, not realizing until now that Norway was under Danish rule until 1814.

Rob, coins in that time era for Scandinavia are very confusing to me. There was so much uproar, on what country owned which, who will be the king, and where and what will be minted as a coin............................well.........

confuses me....................but that coin, if as good as I think the pic shows is worth a lot more, to many, than 50 bucks

Rob & Wayne, thanks so much for the info, it's appreciated!

Would PCGS grade this coin or is it too old? I was thinking
they will only grade so far back on world coins?

Yeah, they'd grade it. It's a milled coin, not a hammered one. Shoot, I've seen 'em grade some hammered pieces back into the 1500s and maybe even 1400s.

I don't know if I would spend the money on it, but if you like it enough to slab it and you don't have that much invested in it to lose, then why not?

PS- according to Wayne, it could be worth good money in its homeland (Norway), and he would know.

However, here in the USA, it is likely to only be a $10-15 coin at best, I would think. Barely worth the cost of slabbing. Unless, as I said, you have nothing in it, or you just feel like slabbing it.
