Home Buy, Sell & Trade - Cards & Memorabilia

Hello

Hi ,

I'm a new memeber to the forums etc ...i've had a quick look around and it seems to be a place that knows a thing or 2 .

I've recently completed the Topps Civil War News set loose in Exc condition . I remember the UK version , issued in 1965 , but decided that the Topps version is of a better quality , larger size etc ...the only UK issue i can re-call from the 1960's in a large format was William Tell .
I'm wandering from the subject ...Civil War News , super set , what hasn't been said etc etc

Can anyone else offer up a suggestion ' set ' that i can now focus my collecting attention on . A set that can be completed but not toooo easily .
It's sometimes to easy to just buy a ready made set .
I'd be willing to pay up $10+ a card .

I'd like to keep it to a ' lads' theme , Cowboys / War etc .. with a date in the 1950's or 1960's , Leaf , Topps etc etc ..

It's slightly more difficult to purchase cards as i'm UK based .

  • Oh, and by the way, Welcome to the Boards,

    Good day,
If you are doing Non Sport, you will probably have to move back to the 50's a bit. A majority of the 1960's stuff is Monster, TV or Movie themed (My Specialty).
1956 Topps Round-up is a nice Cowboy set. Most decent cards should be well under the $10 price if not a lot less. Bowman Frontier days is another nice set, the cards are a bit more in high grade and could run into or slightly above the $10 each. Although buying lots are cheaper usually. There is a Philly Gum 1965 War Bulletin set, but high grade entire sets come up often, so not really much of a challenge.
You need to expand your horizons.....In other words 1960's TV or Monster cards, they are the funnest !!!! Just my opinion.

Actually Collect Non Sport, but am just so full of myself I post all over the place !!!!!!!
  • Cheers Neil , I don't mind moving back a little . I'm game .
The monster sets sound fun , i remember the Philly War set from it's UK issue , there was a nice one for sale on the bay the other day , very tempted but a tad to easy to buy .

I'll try and find some images from the sets you've mentioned , they sound fine .
What i need to do is spend more time on the US sites than the UK ones , knowledge is important .

    Thanks .

  • 1956 Topps Round-Up is a nice set. Some scans are below. Some other sets are 1950 Bowman Wild Man, 1965 Topps Battle (nice compliment to Civil War News - same artist but focus is World War II) and 1966 Leaf Good Guys and Bad Guys. The 1965 Topps Battle will be a challenge due to the smaller print run.

  • Hello , many thanks to Pakman for the high quality scans . Appreciated .
Topps Round Up certainly does look a good set .

I must admit i'm a bit of a stickler for sharp corners etc , those cards look just great .

That's one for my list .

    1) Topps Round Up .

    Cheers .

I have the Battle set issued by the A&BC Gum Co in the UK .
It's a great set , and as you say , compliments the Civil War set to a T .

    Thanks .
  • The Round-Up set is fun because it is small (80 cards), nice graphics and focus on key personalities during the Wild West period. Here are some more scans for you to see: Round-Up. These are my extras. It is a little over 25% of the set. If you are interested in them, let me know.

Some other sets to think about are as follows:

    (1) 1969 Topps Man on the Moon (I opened a wax box recently and scanned a set. Here it is: Man on the Moon)

    (2) 1963 Topps Astronauts (I do not have any scans available)

    (3) 1951 Bowman Jets Rockets and Spacemen (Here are some scans from my set: JRS).

  • Try the DAVY CROCKETT GREENBACK set you will get a lot of the cards for less than 10 bucks, which will allow you to save for the hard numbers, just an idea.

Cheers Guys , many thanks for your suggestions . They all sound fun , interesting & cover great subject matter .
The ' Round Up ' set reminds me a set issued by Primrose Confectionery from the UK in 1960 titled ' Cowboy ' Nowhere near the cost of Round up though , ' Cowboy ' is available for less than $20 !!!
I'll try to scan a few cards from the set .

Hi Scooperqpr , thanks for the suggestion . I've seen the set advertised & must admit i've considered giving it a go .
    My list is growing .

    Thanks .

Hi , the first 10 cards from the ' Cowboy ' set mentioned above . As you can see it's a very colourful set and similar in a way to ' Round Up ' . Issued in UK 1960 with sweet cigarettes . I believe they were called ' Gun Law ' or something similar .

Hope the scans aren't toooo big ...

  • Mark,

Those Cowboy cards are nice. I collect British music and space related cards. If you have access to any 1966 Lord Neilson/Mister Softee music sets or 1968 Anglo Yellow Submarine cards, please let me know.

David , no problem . I'll keep an eye out .

If we reached a deal on the ' Round Up ' extras , what method would be best for payment ?

Are you wired up for PayPal etc ....?

Welcome to the boards. The Round-up set is a great classic '50s set and you can't go wrong! I didn't see it mentioned, but they are the slightly larger sized cards that Topps issued prior to 1957.

Just my 2c worth here, but I think of Civil War News as one of the three in the Holy Trinity of Norm Saunders sets:
CWN; Battle and Mars Attacks. I found that the English versions of Battle and CWN pale only because the pictures are smaller.

You should be able to put together an American Battle set for around 10 bucks a card; sadly, the Mars Attacks set will put you back more, as it is widely considered THE NS set of the '60s.

Good luck; you can't do any better than dealing with Packman, he's top flight.

  • Hello & a good day to you all ,

    Hi MorrellMan ,
Many thanks for your welcome . The pitfalls of collecting ...larger cards prior to 1957 ??!!!
I've a lot to learn .....with about 20 years to do it in ...image

I agree with you about the size of the UK versions , i have the UK Battle & find them a little bit small , i like the larger cards .

I first encountered the Civil War set as a young lad , might have been about 1967 , the set was issued in about 1965 , so the gum was at least 2 years old by the time the cards arrived in the South Wales valleys !!!!
I remember the money most , i'm sure it's because my Dad would look/keep the cards and give me the gum/money , after all , i was only 7 & the cards are quite graphic .
It was while browsing the US e-bay sellers that i stumbled across the money , it opened up so many forgotten memories of my childhood , amazing .
    I just had to have a set , i have now . Mine .

    ^^^^^...forgive the ramblings , i'm Welsh .

image ..i'm not a big fan of Mars Attacks ...some cards are fantastic , some not .

Thanks for the advice & welcome .

    Cheers All .
