2008 United States Mint 50 State Quarters Silver Proof Set™ (V81)

If silver keeps going up I don't expect these will last too long before they are pulled and repriced higher. I placed my order at 12:03pm, February 25th.

    OMG!

I just went to the US Mint web site for the Silver Proof Quarters and saw this:

<< <i>These coins will be minted in 2008, and never again! >>

The number of Home Shopping Network/Coin Vault shows that flashed through my mind was scary!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

  • I bit the bullet ($25.95!) and just put in an order for a few because the Hawaii qtr is in there.

The statement is absolutely true as everybody knows so I guess I was wondering why the US Mint felt the need to make the statement?

It is , after all, fairly cheesey..............

Maybe they should have just stated that this was the last year of the State Quarter Program. Its obvious that they will never be minted again.

How much is the silver worth in one set?
  • Does that mean no Territories Silver Quarters next year?

Edited - oops, "Territorials" - thanks for the correction!
Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.

They will mint Territorials next year.

At just over 0.9 T.O. per set, about $16.80.

  • Factor in a dollar or 2 for the case and packaging and some for the cost of minting and the rest is profit. I don't have a clue what the mint's profit margin is but I do know that silver has increased in price substantially in the last 90 days. They were selling the 2007 set for the same price and silver was several dollars cheaper. Therefore the amount of profit per set has decreased significantly.

I was wondering what last year's price was since I never buy these silver quarter sets. thanks.

I usually wait for the whole Silver Mint proof set but I am starting to think if Silver breaks $20 I should get just the quarters and double up when the proof set is available.
  • The last time I checked, the 2007's were priced at $25.95, same as the 2008's.
  • This is my favorite in the series.

  • yeah that alaska one is one of the nicer ones in the series.
  • Yeah, I agree even though I purchased the set because of the Hawaiian quarter!
  • I have often wondered how much the silver price will change the prices for the older proof sets as well? I think it'll take a few more silver ratchets, but eventually even the "common" sets could be affected.

And what if anything does this mean: "Supplies are limited, so be sure to order your United States Mint 50 State Quarters Silver Proof Set today." Limited to what? I don't remember that before...

Well, I have seen the CuNi 2008 quarters in proof and unfortunately have to report that on the small format of the quarter that the Alaska design is just a might too busy. The Hawaii actually looked the best ( I was expecting Okie to look better but it too was busy). Arizona did not come off well in my opinion...

BTW, this was at the Mint kiosk at Union Station in Wash. DC..

PS Don't check the prices of previous years silver quarters (well over the last four). These things come out on the secondary market at 18-19 dollars - maybe people have not figured out the silver content???

  • I'm guessing they'll be pulling these soon for a reprice if silver keeps going ballistic.
