In addition to the 1975 set, can you guys help me build a great NRMT/MT 1976 set w/ PSA 7 key cards?

Okay, as you guys remember from last month, I made a topic about how I wanted to build a really great NRMT/MT 1975 Topps set. Well, I'm going to be getting some good money in about 3-4 weeks (it's for my birthday this March 22) and I want to use some of it to not only finish up the 1975 set, but I also want to upgrade my current 1976 set. If you'll recall, vintagetoppsguy came through for me with a near set loaded with PSA 7's, and I want to do the same for 1976 (and 1974 and 1973 as well). Now, I have no trouble finding single PSA 7's on Ebay, but the tricky part is finding a solid NRMT/MT near set (that does not include key cards unless already PSA 7). I already have the set (minus the raw key cards that I just sold on Ebay) but it's only about 1/2 EXMT, 1/2 NRMT or so.

And this is where I need you guys' help. Basically what I'm looking for is as solid a NRMT/MT raw near set as possible (that does NOT include the nine key cards listed below unless already PSA 7's). The first group of cards listed I absoultely want graded; the second group would be very nice to have graded but are not essential. The rest I want raw but as solid NRMT/MT as possible (Traded set included would be most helpful). I absoultely love the 1975 set (and still working on it too; check my sig to see what I still need) because it's a nice colorful set but 1976 is pretty colorful in its own right as well. Again, I know you can find these as PSA 7 singles on Ebay w/o any problem, but the idea is try to be able to get as many as I can in one purchase to cut down on the shipping costs.

Then I guess once I finish the 1975 and 1976 sets (and I still need PSA 7's of the key 1977 and the Ozzie/Ryan RC's), 1974 will be next! image

Estil, I'll give you the 1975 Reggie on the left if you want it. I submitted both and thought both had a shot at PSA 9. My scans are fuzzy but they're both 8's. The one on the right has better color so I want to keep it. PM me your address if you want the left Reggie.

That auction is for 1975 Topps minis Vito. I think Estil only needs the regular sized 1975 Topps.

You should look at the very reasonably priced 1976 lot RonBurgundy has on the Trading page, while it may be a grade below what you are after it is a big start, plus Ron grades conservatively ...

1976 Topps partial set of 440 cards: really nice lot of cards here, most are NM and better; there are some EM cards plus centering issues but for someone looking to build a clean NM set it's a great starter. Corners on majority of these are very strong, includes many minor stars, a few stars, and one nice Brett that is o/c. $60 delivered.

Reggie just arrived in the mail today! Thanks again, Darin! image

My wife also just told me that I should be getting even MORE money for my cards for my b-day sometime in mid-March (before 3/22 for sure), perhaps up to $1200!! image I should definetly have no trouble finishing my 1975-79 sets then! I just have to be sure to plan carefully how to use it.

Also, are there any good dealers on Ebay that have a good inventory of 1970s cards in PSA 7 (or perhaps 8's in 1978 and 1979)? I had thought about that "four sharp corners" one on Ebay (it appears to have a VERY nice selection) but a lot of people here seem to think it's a joke as well.

Back in the 80's I had started a 1975 set, I found the box and album that they have been in at my parents house on my most recent treasure hunt. It looks to be about 65%, with approx. 1/3 of those in 7 or better, the rest are all over. All of the star cards are there and I have a decision to forge on and try to upgrade the really bad stuff and complete it or let it go. So Estil, how tough has it been to find the needed commons (in 7 or better)? And about how much are they going for (graded and raw)?
  • EstilEstil Posts: 7,225 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well, finding raw sets in about NRMTish grade isn't too tough. And of course, finding 7's is pretty easy as well (the hard part is trying to find someone with more than just one or two). Now, if you're looking to say, get all 660 cards in graded form, that would be most difficult even if you're only doing 7's or 8's.

What I would suggest with your current 1975's would be to either look on Ebay (or if someone here has one) either a complete raw set or near set (but be sure to see scans to make sure it's the condition you want) and then just cherry pick from your and the other set/lot and pick out the ones you think are best. Then you can sell the lesser lot and get at least some of your money back. Also on Ebay, be sure to look at the ones that actually have bids on them to get an idea of what cards in different PSA grades go for. I think most of the 1975 and 1976 PSA 7's I need (again, in my sig) should go for no more than $10 shipped but again, finding someone with several of them that I can buy at one time would really save on the shipping (plus sellers tend to give better deals if you offer to buy more stuff).

As for my 1975 near set (I'm still lacking the cards listed in my sig as well as the Yount, but I already got someone with a Yount and the 1956 and 1957 MVPs in PSA 7 for $45 shipped; hope that's a good deal), I was able to get it for $375. I haven't started upgrading the raw cards yet (overall they're pretty nice already; probably still needs a few upgrades) because as of right now, my 1976 set needs the raw upgrade the most.

    Estil,

My Boys and I are still working on raw 1974-1982 sets... we sent you a few cards last year and are very close to completing years 1974, 77-82. So, send us your wantlist once you get going on the other years and we'll try to help out (we have a lot of duplicates for most years).

    Good luck!
