Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

Hello

Hello, my name is Trace. I've recently gotten back into the hobby after a purchase from Target of 2008 Topps. I haven't collected since I was younger. I found a hobby shop in the town I live in and went to buy some more. The owner told me about this website. He said if I had any extra's of what I opened from the box I could probably trade on here. I saw the Buy Sell Trade forum and sent someone a message that I had some to trade.
I clicked on this link and have been reading some of the interesting posts. Seems like so much has changed. I'm not even familiar with graded cards or what they even are, but they seem interesting. Just thought I would introduce myself.

    Hi Trace.

    Welcome!

I don't do the Topps regular set anymore but if you get interested in the Topps Heritage set - you've come to the right place.

Every year at this time the board lights up with a buzz of activity with trading night and day.

As it goes for learning? Just hang around - there's plenty to see.

Good luck on your 08 Topps set and don't be a stranger!

    Welcome!

Good luck with your Topps set. I was suckered into a hobby box of 2008 UD because of the 2 game used/1 auto per box (on average I have to add). Well of course, I got two cruddy GU cards out of the first 2 packs I opened and no auto, which is what I was hoping for. I won't be purchasing any more unopened UD.

Good luck, you'll learn a lot here.

    welcome!

MAke sure to ask alot of questions, no matter how much heat you take from the members here! If you do want to buy graded cards, make sure to ask here. There are bad grading companies and good ones. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. I was in your boat a few years ago, I wish i had found this place sooner!
  • Welcome porkchop! I too was very unfamiliar with graded cards, game used cards, etc. when I first arrived here. A lot has changed, but a lot of good things have occured because of it. Welcome to a great community.

  • When I opened the box of 2008 Topps I bought at the hobby store I found this card with what seemed to be a piece of someone's jersey in it. I asked the guy what that was all about and he said that those were the hottest cards. He also said people are actually autographing cards now. I looked at some that he had there, but they seemed way out of my budget. He told me that I could probably find some like those on ebay, but I'm not sure about cards with stuff in them. I must admit though that autographs sound interesting.
  • Welcome Trace once you get it in you never really get out of it. Cards find a way of getting into your blood. You make time off and do other things but you always come back.

    Sorry for ruining the fun.............

    Hello, hello, hello
    Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
    Is there anyone at home?

    Come on, come on down,
    I hear you’re feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.

    Relax, relax, relax
    I need some information first.
    Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move, but I can’t hear what you’re saying.

    When I was a child, I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I’ve got that feeling once again.
I can’t explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.

    I have become comfortably numb.

    [guitar solo]

    I have become comfortably numb.

    OK, OK, OK
    Just a little pin pr**ck.
    There’ll be no more, aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh,
But you may feel a little sick.

Can you stand up, stand up, stand up.
I do believe it's working good.
That’ll keep you going for the show.
Come on, it’s time to go.

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move, but I can’t hear what you’re saying.

When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look, but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child has grown, the dream is gone.

    I have become comfortably numb.

  • Welcome to the boards Porkchop!!! Just make sure that you collect what you like to collect. The whole "game used" and (to a lesser extent) auto'd card thing is really alot of hype. The good ones are hard to come by most of the time (unless you spend the cash and buy from ebay) and you'll spend much more money trying to find them than they're worth unless you're actually trying to collect the base set, then at least you're not throwing away your money trying to find the "needle in a haystack."
Sorry I can't help you on the '08 Topps, but good luck. I'm collecting the '07 set for my son (his birth year) and the 2007 Topps '52 Rookies set (1952 Topps design).

Feel free to ask any questions you have, anytime, there's alot of great people on these boards as I have come to find out.

Welcome Porkchop. Clyde I really would not call the auto thing hype. Since they been inserted in packs since 1992 or so. They have each year risen in popularity and demand. The high prices are not so much hype either,as it is the amount people are more than willing to pay.

Maybe I said that wrong. I was referring to what the card shop owner said to the OP as far as the "latest craze" or whatever. I'm a fan of the GU and auto cards, I was just making sure that Porkchop wasn't going to try and chase down auto's or GU that have 1:17,000 odds. You can spend alot of money doing that, with odds similar to lottery scratch off tickets. When I said "hype" I was mostly referring to the "hype" of someone finding a 1/1 or 1/5 auto or GU and in turn, raising others' expectations on what they will receive in a $50 hobby box. The OP seems to be dark about GU and auto inserts (since he just started collecting again), and I thought it justified at least some sort of warning.

*edit* And now that I think about it, with the whole Hillary card thing, it is all hype created by the card companies. Is a 1/1 auto card really "1/1." Sure in the sense that the card company only made one of them, thus creating the "hype." The only reason it's a "1/1" is because that company (for one reason only) decided to only create one of that card, creating a rarity out of thin air. Of course their are other auto'd cards from different companies of the same player (with a different designed card of course) and I could probably make my own "1/1" TTM style. I think it's important to differentiate the word "rare" as far as vintage cards vs. modern.

And I'm by no means trying to start an arguement here, like I said, I think auto'd and GU cards are pretty cool sometimes, and obviously have their place in our hobby, but I think some sort of "reality check" needs to be there.
