Hey National Dealers, when you go to a National Show......

Hey National Dealers, when you go to a National Show, do you reach out to your clients in the respective city beforehand and invite them to anything? Your booth? A drink? A dinner for clients? Anything? Just curious.

The ANA Money Show is coming to my hometown for the first time and was wondering what the big boys usually do. It would be kind of off-putting if I spent say, over $10K in 2007 with one National dealer in particular and I didn't at least get a "hope to see you at my booth" note or email.

But I may be off base here, so I'm curious as to what is customary in this regard. Thanks for your input.

Best regards,

This is not at all unusual. For the really big boys, it does take 7 figures in biz to get (and keep) their attention.

However, for the majority of dealers at a national show, I would say that 10K of business should at least get you face recognition and a hello. For certain "national dealers in particular", however, 10K may well get you a blank stare.

As for getting a dealer to invite you to dinner and picking up the check, good luck with that image

So, to get a jelly donut ,would take

a lot more then 10,000 dollars. Then a

steak dinner and drinks, would take a

million dollars? It better be a really good

    steak.

Depending on how the dealer's personality is socially and his monetary spending habits, dealers will often invite their local customers for a visit to their booths or to some social event outside of the coin show. Some astute dealers will mail out informational letters or flyers to their local customers in advance of the coin show informing their customers of their presence.

Although the amount of money you spend with a dealer is important to an extent, a warm, friendly personality will fufill more positives with others than a fat wallet accompanied by an abrasive personality. Case in point, I know of one person who still attends coin shows in California but hasn't purchased a meaningful coin in at least a decade but he is universally liked by all dealers and collectors who know him (a few people will know who I'm talking about).

If the dealer got you really good deals, or if you want to pick his brain, may YOU should treat him to dinner/lunch.
  • Thanks guys for the input. I'm excited for the Phoenix show. Many of the best dealers in the country are attending with booths on the bourse, some of whom I've purchased from in one capacity or another, (Anadonda, Whitlow, Legend, Harry Laibstain, Evan Gale, John Hambrick, Wayne Herndon, Don Willis, Fred Weinberg, and a host of currency dealers as well). I was disappointed that Mark Feld's name was not on the dealer list, but I think at times he shares a booth. I'll shoot him an email and see if he is attending.

Grandpa Bear, thanks for the compliment on my little Benji-boy. He would give you a really big smile if you met him I'm sure.
Here's one just for you Granpa Bear!
