Should Congress authorize .900 fine silver First Spouse pieces?

With increases in the price of gold, the First Spouse program seems destined to shrink. It seems very unlikely that they can sell 160,000 of these at $600+ each this year or into the future. (At $300+ each, I was planning to build a set for my daughters, but that’s impossible at present prices. The examples I have will likely be sold as bullion.)

Do you think Congress should authorize a silver coin of the same size and eliminate the gold version?

Shrinking mintages are a good thing for collectors in the long term. I say keep the First Spouses in gold. They may make for some rare coins in years to come.

They already have the bronze medals for those that want something less expensive.
  • Maybe do both? Limited edition gold for those actual collectors wanting and already invested in a set. I don't collect the gold, but I may consider starting a set for my daughter if they came in silver...

Edited to add, I just saw Zoins post after I hit enter, I don't and wouldn't collect bronze mint commems, silver, I probably would on these.

  • I think since collectors prefer Proofs, that option will sell fine though I do believe the Unc option mintage will likely decrease with the future Spouse issues.

  • I collect the medals. They're cheap, and they still have the first spouse design.

Congress should do the spouse coins in tenth ounce gold...and it should have been the only denomination offered in the series.

They would have been too small to appreciate some of tthe intricate reverse designs.

Maybe they could do what the Canadian mint is already doing I believe on some of its gold issues, reduce the fineness down to .500 and keep some of the gold and be able to lower the price and make them more affordable.Even say a drop down to .750 might help out.
