My bank searches (updated with recent nickel finds)

Let me first say that my bank usually stinks about getting in new coins, especially the prez. dollars.
But after reading many, many posts on here from others who have great tellers and banks, I figured
I might as well check with them.

Went in this morning to get some cash and some more rolls of nickels to search through...and the
teller said they usually don't order any of the new coin because they have to get a whole box. Thanks
to my knowledge from the forum I knew these "bricks" are $1000. I asked if they ever order boxes for
customers that want to buy the whole box. She said sure they can, just give them a week's notice.

Now the challenge is to save up $1000 while fighting the urge to buy more coins with it...

I think I will try to come up with 1K though and get a brick of Monroe dollars and search for the elusive
Monroe quarters, just for fun. At the very least I'll cherrypick the best coins and save maybe 50-100
and spend the rest.

Anyway, thanks for the all advice on here everyone!

It seems like you've figured it out all on your own.

Please inform us if you find anything cool w/ the Monroe's.

  • I'm after halves and I just requested my local bank order me a box.

The teller told me it had been so long she wasn't even sure how much I would pay for a box of halves.

I'll find out in a week.

    Results from today:

    Out of $10 in nickels: 1 - 1938 Jefferson
Out of $50 in dollar coins: spending money! (=nothing worth keeping)

Searched through $20 in nickels from my bank today and found an unusually high number of older Jeffs. Out of 10 rolls I found almost an ENTIRE roll of nickels that were pre-1970 (39 total coins). No great dates, but still...here's what I found today:

    1941
    1949
    1957
    1957D
    1959
    1959D
    1961D
    1962D - 2
    1963D - 3
    1964 - 9
    1964D - 9
    1965 - 2
    1966 - 3
    1967
    1968D
    1968S
    1969D
    1969S
Note: these were all well mixed among the ten rolls I searched today. I never find that many old dates.

among all of these, most were average, but a handful stood out and I was ready to toss them in the 90's or 00's cup when I found myself surprised by the dates. '59, '63d, '64, '64d all had pieces that were very close to AU/BU.

A couple questions for the board...
Do you think people are cleaning out their old Jeffersons because of the economy?
Why so many 1964 Jeffs compared to other dates? I have only searched through $100 or so in nickels this year and already have nearly two full rolls of 1964 nickels.

It should also be noted that I only found 2 '05 buffalos!

Nice finds. Keep at it you you can build quite a set from your roll searches...

<< <i>Do you think people are cleaning out their old Jeffersons because of the economy? >>

Possible, but doubtful and hard to prove. Nickels have been good for searching for years. Lack of design change and minimal numismatic value help to keep older coins in circulation.

<< <i>Why so many 1964 Jeffs compared to other dates? >>

Massive mintages in the billions. If you see a nickel, tales up and with a D mintmark, chances are it's a 1964.

For some reason, I save only the pre-64s. I save AU/BU 1965-1967s if they show up. Also, I save the S-mints. I'm just a hoarder.
  • Trust me that you may not find too many high MS monroe's to hold onto. These prez dollars seem to be in pretty bad shape, the mint wasn't joking when they say these are for circulation.

I think the Denver coins came out better than the Philadelphia coins:

Most likely you already know this, but 1968-S, and 1969-S nickels are proofs, as are all S-mint nickels dated 1973 or later.

I never realized how many proofs circulate until I started reading this board. I stopped looking through rolls back in the late 1960's.

Not all. San Francisco struck nickels for circulation from 1968-1970.

You were surprised to find a 1964 dated nickel in a roll? I'd be surprised if I DIDN'T!

Today's search of $20 in nickels yielded 35 coins pre-1970.
I know, these are common, but when it comes to nickels I save everything pre-1970.

I have now searched $150 this year and I'm building a roll of each date and mint mark.
Obviously, I've found hundreds of current nickels, so I constantly pick out the choicest coins now
    and upgrade my rolls.

There are many other dates that I've found none or only 1 or 2 coins thus far (mostly D-mints).
    No war nickels yet, either.

    Today's finds:
    1946
    1953
    1953-D
    1958-D (2)
    1962-D (2)
    1963 (2)
    1963-D (3)
    1964 (8)
    1964-D (9)
    1965
    1967
    1968-D (2)
    1969-D
