Any good shops in Springfield, IL?

I'm heading to Lincon's home next week for my sister-in-law's wedding, and amongst the celebrations I wondered if anyone here knows any good shops in that area? I might find time to squeeze in a shop trip or two while I'm there if I time it just right... image

F1 ........... Hope you have a great trip to the Land of Lincoln ! The Presidential Library is a must see ! As for card shops , sadly they have gone the way of the Dodo birds and Dinasours ! The last major card shop we had was ' B+J Coin Shop ' , and it was a prime example of what you despise about bad card shops and why E-Bay spelled the demise of so many !
If your lucky , there is a monthly card show at the Siginature Inn on Stevenson Drive on Sunday's ! And it is always the same people and not many tables ! Very little vintage , but if you are looking for Modern and new wax , you are in luck !
Here is a website to go to ' CardshopFinder.com ' , which will give you a list of surrounding card shops in the area ! Not sure how far you are willing to travel , but the closest is in Decatur ( about 25 miles ) and the others are 65 to 80 mi. ( Danville , Bloomington - Normal , Peoria-Pekin and Urbana ) ! I have not been to any of them , but if I were to visit one , my choice would be ' Shoeless Joe's Sports Cards' in Urbana ! They sell alot on E-Bay , so you could probably check out their store there !
Good luck , and hope you find something !

The only "good" card shop is one which has gone out of business.

    Just kidding.
  • Robby,
Thanks for the tips. We've been to a lot of the 'real' sites in and around Springfield. The Lincoln Library and museum was really nice. My in-laws have lived there for a couple of years now (before that they were in St Louis and Chicago), but I hadn't gotten back into cards since we visited last year at Easter. We'll probably be heading back home on Sunday, so if the show is going on, we'll miss it.

Here's a personal observation about Lincoln's early life- if you view the 'artist's conception' of young Lincoln in Kentucky, you'll see hills and mountains in the paintings. If you view them in Illinois (at the Lincoln Library, for example), the artists don't include these landscape features. image

I've lived here in Springfield for over 3 years now and have yet to find anything. I think the Signature in show was just a couple weeks ago. Went there once and wasn't worth the drive. I'm from Peoria and I really think the only shop that has any cards is probably my fathers coin shop, but health conditions have kept is closed quite a bit the last couple of months. Besides, he really hasn't done much with cards since the mid 90's, so he is an overgrader. They have cards in several different spots, so it's difficult for them to find the stuff you actually want in a timely manner. I had over 1000 cards graded for him back around 2000, but no high grade vintage. Of course, the less of it he sells off, the more he can give to me someday! Anyway, have a great time here in Springfield....if that is possible and if you unearth some great place for cards here, please let us know!

Who is your dad? Hadley? I haven't been in there for 15+ years, but I have noticed that the shop is still there.

Don, Yes, that is my dad. Both my folks are in their 70's now and I think that it's just going to be a matter of time before he shuts it down. They talked me into going to work there back in 1999 and I worked there for about 3 years, but if you know my father, it's sometimes difficult to get along with him.... and I couldn't. The intent was for me to take over the shop in 5-7 years, but I thought me NOT working there would make for better family relations. Although you don't see it, he has tons of stuff stored away. I just wish he still had some of the stuff he had back in the late 80's and early 90's. The Mantle cards alone could pay off my house today. Anyway, if there is ever something specific you need, I could always give them a heads up and give them the time to pull it out or dig it out when I'm up there.

    Take Care,

    Tim
