Hey Prospective Coin Photogs.....Best deal going to get into the DSLR world

This is dirt cheap if you ask me and a darn fine camera if you can deal with refurbished gear. Should still get a full warranty.

Real cheap for a kit... does the d40 or d40x have the potential for the lens exchange issues?

  • You can change lenses but the D40 does NOT have an autofocus motor in the body. The lens must have it on it so it limits your lens choices but there's plenty of Nikon glass nowadays with autofocus motors.

  • JapanJohn....thanx for that link. Refurbished units, more times than not, function better than a brand new one out of the box. Refurbished units, they go through the entire unit individually, as opposed to mass manufacturing, where machines just jam things into it til it works. Good looking out, JapanJohn!
  • I guess I never fully understood the concept of "refurbished" electronics. Are these returns from customers that were checked to ensure they are "like-new". Are they used and reconditioned cameras? Are they all of the above?
  • My understanding of refurbished is that they were defective or a claim they were defective (probably by a pixel peeper) and were sent to the factory for repair and test. As I understand it Factory Refurbished comes with a full warranty.

Manual focus is all you really need for coins anyway. image

You just have to make sure you get one general purpose lens with autofocus and you are set.
  • I agree. I have had several cameras that could not auto-focus properly on coins because of how close or small they were. I would get the table in focus but not the coin surface, or everything would be fuzzy.

  • I agree with manual focus as well. I've read articles where it is claimed that the human eye and a manual focus will almost always produce sharper results than autofocus.

Autofocus can almost always be turned off.

That being said I use either a 105mm manual focus macro lens or a 60mm autofocus lens that is manually focused.

If it doesn't move there is NO REASON to use autofocus.
