Q. about a Morgan rev

1878 Morgan and on the rev is a larger sized upside down S engraved perfectly under the wing.

Has anyone ever heard or seen something like this or have an idea of what it could be?

From your close-up image it appears to be a counterstamp(post Mint) rather than an engraving. Someone had too much time on their hands, and a letter punch conveniently at their disposal.

I think you're right about the counterstamp. This buffalo is engraved (or chiseled)....
