What is a good price on an 1899 $10 liberty in 61?

I have the opprotunity to buy a $10 lib in PCGS MS61, and I was curious what a reasonable price is? I have checked ebay and TT and Heritage, and there haven't been any sold for a while. I'd love to get one at the price they last sold at (350 or so) but I dont' see that happening.

what is a good price, and is this a good "investment" coin - is the price tied closely to spot value, or no?

  • $485-$500 would be a fair price. As a MS61, it is tied close to spot.

For the money, though, you might consider buying a modern half ounce coin. It would be tied closer to spot, and (I think) has more gold content.

Make sure it's not a chewed up 61 if you try to sell it on the BST later, or else you'll get your listing skewered for selling a dog. image
  • I have very little classic gold, and while I am not a collector of gold coins per se, I am interested in having more. I have many ounces of modern stuff, but only 3 classic gold coins.

Decisions, decisions. I used to have a few saints, but I had to sell when I started my company up a few years ago - and I've been kicking myself since. I miss my old gold.

I am in the same boat, want more classics and trying to figure out good buy prices.

it all depends on the coin.

if a really PQ example it might easily fetch 550-600 dollars on ebay.
if average for the grade, 500-550.
if sorta ugly for the grade 475-500.

at the very least i would expect it to get 475 and above just due to melt.
  • Very good info. I am the buyer, and I do know a nice coin when I see one, so that's a plus. I haven't seen this one yet, and the gentleman is pricing it for me now.

I would think anywhere between $500-$550 at current gold pricing + Numismatic premium.

  • If it's chewed up I won't buy it. I buy coins, not slabs.
