Shoot, at first I would have said road rash but looking at the rest of the coin in such good shape I would have to agree something is going on.

If it is indeed struck thru, it would be fun to have PCGS attribute it in a slab.

I don't think its a grease filled error because the area in question is all nicked/Marked up. I think it is a underweight planchet / poor striking pressure or a Coin caught in the press at half stroke.

also it could be a very thin "split after strike" that affected only that area of the bust...really thin.
