silver halves from a bank

So I decided to do a little coin hunting at some local banks. I didn't realize how tough it would be to purchase rolled coin from a bank. Most banks requiring an account there to purchase anything more then a couple rolls. I didn't expect to find many half dollars and older dollar coins but I did expect there to be atleast some. Come to find out, its rare for the bank to have any more of these coins then the dozen or so that is in there tellers tray. The teller at the bank I went to today said she did have some halves as she pulled out a small white pouch. She offered to sell me a couple of the coins but as soon as I saw that they were obviously silver I want all 20. Unfortunately this meant I had to have an account. So silly how banks require an account to sell any significant amount of coins, but I guess its to protect them from running out, "I guess". So I sat through a 15 minute new account setup, deposited my minimum $10 LOL, and then got the coins. Turns out there were 19-1969D and 1-1979. All are in pretty good condition ranging I'd say from high XF to maybe low MS. Now if I can only get some kind of setup going were the tellers hold onto unusual coin deposits for me.

I recommend that you start by bringing the teller who sold you those 20 halves a small box of quality chocolates. Then open a CD of at least $3,000.

THEN, ask if they can keep an eye out for unusual roll deposits for you. image

"Coin collecting problem"? What "coin collecting problem"?
  • at my local bank I gotten in good graces with one of the tellers and she is now on the lookout for IKE's and Kennedy's - everytime I go in I dont even have to ask - she smiles and hands me the coins - sometimes I get a handful - other times she might have a half a bag and so far its been somewhat profitable - have found a few MS IKEs and a couple of three silver Kennedy's - you need to let the tellers at your bank know that you are a coin collector and ask them to save any coins from the 60's & 70's - if's been good for me - give it try!!

I have dealt with the branch manager to get me rolls of stuff that I want. She can order it from the armored car service they use.

The problem with my local banks is that the tellers themselves are collectors...image
  • My bank is large enough I hardly ever get the same teller twice a month. Also, they never have half dollars around. When they come in they make the customer put them in the counting machine, then the big bags get shipped out.
