Why would PSA do this?

I just received my order back from PSA, that was entered on Dec. 3rd and grades were posted on Feb 15th. I was told that the order was too far along to grade on the .5 scale - which I didn't like but will live with. I received the order today, and the cards are put in the new slabs!! What the hell? Why would they not grade the cards on the .5 scale and then encapsulate in the new slab - to give the appearance that the order was graded after the change went into effect? Do I have a right to be as p*ssed as I am?

Thoughts??

That is odd, if they graded you under the old system they should have slabbed you that way.

perhaps they did grade you under the new system and you did not get any .5's?

    Good for you.
  • Greg,

That is bogus, now any high quality 8.5's appear to be only 8's

    I would be upset too!

    That's rough...

My guess is that your cards were done and out of the grading room and were held up at the encapsulation process...So the grades were already in the system, but they didn't get slabbed until after the new flip change...

PSA most definitely should have, at the very least, ensured that any orders already graded NON .5 but awaiting encapsulation were DONE and shipped before they started using the new flips (which I personally hate)...

Unfortunately, looks like Greg got caught in the crossfire..IMO, his entire order fee should be refunded...

Nope - it was a 70 card order and no .5's.

I'm disappointed all the way around w/ the order. I handed the order in on November 17th in Chicago and the grades weren't posted until Feb 15th. To boot, I wasn't thrilled w/ the grades, PSA wouldn't grade on the .5 scale and they encapsulate the cards in the new flips. F- in my view.

And to boot, they mislabeled 10% of the cards - unreal. I painstakingly wrote down the variations and they still screwed it up. Thank god the people in quality control at PSA don't work for a car or airline manufacturer. If they did, I would ride a bike or walk everywhere!!

I would most definately contact Joe Orlando about this. Your order should be redone at THEIR expense!
  • they bank on you cracking and resubmitting
  • Resubmit them all, you're bound to get a couple different grades

If the purpose of the new flip is to show they were graded under the new .5 system but they were not then these cards are mislabeled. You have every right to be upset. The least PSA should do is a free review. They should also cover shipping charges. It would be grossly unfair for you to be burdened with any additional expense.

It seems like you did get cought in the middle of system changes. If you received the new flips, yet your cards were graded under the old (non .5 system) your entire order is in error. IMO

It's bad enough that you had a bunch of mis-labled flips

i almost always end up with around 10% of my cards mislabled. on this last one they couldnt determine if a card was a members only despite the stamp on the front of the card. it happened repeatedly in this order. i even had the regular cards in their as well back to back. one of those got slabbed as a members only but it wasnt. how hard is this to tell when its right on the card? lets see my order sat their logged in since 12/5 and grades posted on 2/15. yet they still cant get it right.

i didint get any 0.5 grades either. yet new flip. 200 card order but no 0.5 grades. though i did get a good number of 9's and 10's.

For the riff raff they have working in the data entry department, pretty tough...I can't imagine they are anything more than minimum wage high school dropouts...There's really no other explanation. Anyone with half a brain or who cares at all about there job would get the labelling CORRECT more often...

I have a question, when the submission popped why didn't you say something then to them? If I understand what happened properly you knew that they were graded under the old system maybe you could have called before they shipped? I understand you had no idea that they would use the new certs and only realized it when you finally received the order.

I know what i said sounds like monday morning quarterbacking.

In any event maybe others will do what I just mentioned and some good would come out of your situationalbeit for them.

    Steve:

What was he supposed to say? "Hey, I know you took forever and you didn't grade with the new .5 scale, but make sure you don't put the cards in slabs with the new flips!" I'm sure that wouldn't be the first thing on his mind, my mind, or even your mind, but it's easy to say so AFTER the fact. Yes! It not only sounds like Monday morning quarterbacking, it IS Monday morning quarterbacking! It's also using the fact that hindsight is 20/20 to question someone that has a legitimate gripe. Not really all that fair, in my opinion.

I doubt that any of us would've been thinking about such a thing until actually getting the cards and seeing the new flips, especially after being told that only orders graded with the new system would get the new flips!

Given the issues with this order, I would DEMAND that it be regraded under the new system on PSA's dime. Quality customer service would OFFER that to you, however. Although, many times, customer service at PSA is an oxymoron.

If the cards were encapsulated with the new flip but not graded to the new .5 scale, every card should be re-graded to the .5 scale (at their expense) or every card should get a new holder with the old flip.

I would contact whoever you have to at PSA.

how do you know what the flips look like until you see them in your hands. ahh you have to wait to get them in the mail to see if they were the new flips.

of my 198 cards that were graded in my 200 card order, 74 would have been possible 0.5. None were. Yet they were on new flips. My sub was submitted with Gregs at the Sun Times show in chicago and logged in on 12/5. overall i was happy with my grades as roughly 63% were 9 or 10. However after seeing that the new flips were used I am pissed that in all likely hood my sub was graded with the 0.5 option. Unlike Greg, I didnt call to ask but would assume that I would have gotten the same response that he did. I will be sending Joe an email today once my system gets up and running here at work.

I think the one thing we have to remember here, is that grading is a separate process from printing the flips and encapsulating the cards. If your cards were out of the grading room prior to 1 Feb, they were not graded on the .5 scale...If you were unlucky enough to have been graded before 1 Feb, yet not encapsulated until after the flip change, you most likely ended up like Greg...

PSA should have made a concerted effort to complete all PRE-half grade submissions all the way through until they were return shipped before ever beginning the new grading or new flips...They had to know there would be cases such as these if they didn't...The question is, will they make it right? Probably not, but never hurts to ask...

i guess unlucky is a good choice of words. as you figured in another thread that PSA8 in a old holder will be worth more than a PSA8 in a new holder as that one was already deemed unworthy of a 8.5. So I guess people in our situtation are really screwed. as we have new holders, therefore deemed not 8.5 worthy, but were never graded with a 8.5 as a possiblity.

When it is/was logged means nothing. If the cards passed through the grading room prior to Feb. 1st, then they weren't graded on the .5 scale...Feb. 1st or after and you'll get the .5 scale.

Regardless, you will get the new slab/flip because whenever they decided to change it, they switched their program seemingly that day to print out the new style flips. Since you don't show the grades as popped, they haven't been slabbed.

considering that less than 1% of cards are getting 1/2 grades anyway, the whole allure of the 1/2 grade will run it's course very quickly and it will be back to the same old judge the card and buy the card not the holder

Wait, I've got teenagers! And I've read their texts. Maybe PSA SHOULD outsource to India rather than employ some of the Tweens and early 20's folks to handle the data entry!
  • Greg, just read your post and I hope you got resolution to this. You should be p*ssed off! This is really outrageous and they should resolve it at the least by giving you a free review whereby you would get likely get some .5s. Of course they could claim that none qualified I suppose. Yuk... What a "new system". It's enough to make you puke! Pure fleecing of loyal customers...
