If there isn't a wrinkle in that Mantle I'd be surprised.

I thought cellos began in 71 or 72? Didn't a guy here once find a super rare 72 cello and Steve Hart said it was good?

I only remember wax in the 60's.

    Good for you.

Yes, they did make cello packs in 1967.

No, they did not look like this one - an obvious put-together pack.

"Wrapper is guaranteed to be vintage 1967 and made by Topps."

I recall several years ago a collector that showed up at Frank and Sons and busted a 60's box of baseball cellos and pulled 9 Mantles from the box. There were several witnesses to this including (Chris Weber? I think he used to run the Naxcom shows at Hollywood) that could verify this. Of course i showed up after the fact though to see the Mantles pulled. Story was he was only going to open 4 packs, but after the 3rd Mantle popped up, he busted the rest for 6 more.

I opened a 67 cello pack (was 1/3 of a rack pack) approximately 20 years ago. I hit a Steve Carlton in the pack. I dont have the Carlton any longer but I have the commons from that pack.

Then the 72 I am referring to was the first to have printing on it?

Come to think of it I do remember cellos back in the 60's only i didn't have the 19 cents that they would cost.

I had a quarter for the day and it bought 2 packs of cards a soda and a devil dog.

This guy is a known resealer and has been reinventing himself numerous times on ebay under different IDs. All his packs are fake.

There are legit cellos from 1967, and other years during this era, too, but even the value of those packs take a hit because of garbage like this. Same goes for the value of authentic early '70s cellos because of the fake 12-card grocery cellos. The authentic cellos from the '60s did conatin 12 cards, though, in most cases.

Though not a mainstream cello pack, this is interesting. Stole the image off ebay...

  • So would a non-educated person think these are real?

And ifen if the cello is man-made, is the Mick still worth quite a bit of dough?

The value of a pack with a Mantle on top will FAR exceed the value of the actual card, that is why these guys fabricate these "star" packs. As for the card itself, it's probably been trimmed, LOL!

    Yankeeno7,

Beautiful pic of a 1957 Guild cello pack. A super rare and authentic pack, owned, I believe, by a member of this board.
