FSH - Counterfeit $5 gold COPY COPY COPY!

See images below...

Confirmed by local coin shop to be high quality counterfeit $5 Indians. Confirmed 22K gold. Total weight is 50.1 grams. They offered bullion prices of course.

People have told me that there are collectors of counterfeit coins. Make me an offer on these, AND LET ME KNOW WHERE YOU WANT ME TO SCRATCH THE WORD "COPY" ONTO THEM. I won't sell them here w/out marking them to keep them from being passed off as genuine.

good counterfeits.......wudda fooled me from those pics.

Scratching "COPY" onto them sounds so harsh. Maybe you can get a very small punch set and stamp it onto them to make it neat and noticable. Just my opinion.

  • Glad you at least found out they are real gold, good for you! image
imageQuid pro quo. Yes or no?
  • If you will scratch "copy" on them they will look horrible and no one will want them.

Lots of people collect counterfeits and use them for study. Defacing them will reduce any collectible value.

And lots of people will sell an unmarked fake as genuine. I think something does need to be done so they are designated as fakes.

An option is to donate them to the ANA so they can be used to educate collectors. Also, that takes them off the market. However, the downside is that the tax write-off ("cash equivalent") is much less than an outright sale. If a donation to the ANA is the decision, I would recommend contacting Robin Sisler, the Collections Manager first to work out the logistics (it's a nice courtesy). He can be reached on this Board as lostsisler or at sisler@money.org.

Defacing them, while understood for the reasons of protecting future collectors, will reduce their desirability to those of us who collect counterfeits and use them for educational purposes.

  • The guy at my local coin shop offered me $1150 for the set of six, to melt. Agreed to let me mark them. Anyone care to top that, or shall I sell them for melt.

Not in a financial position to donate...

Sell them to board members. I think we're a group of trustworthy individuals.
  • I'd at least get an opinion beyond the local coin shop, not to belittle the persons abilities,
but the more heads the better in a matter such as this. Particularly if this same shop made the melt offer.

Before selling them without COPY prominately marked, check the law. My recollection was that is illegal to sell them without the marking.

I would go get a second opinion before scratching anything on to the coin. They are made of gold, and of the same weight as a U.S. $5.00 and you are supposed to ruin the coin by scratching it up?

There is no financial incentive to forge a common date $5.00 gold with the exact same amount of gold that a real one has.

dont you mean someone who works for ANACS?

whats to say they were not accurate and what distinguished them to be considered "FAKE" a second opinion is worth not making a pricy mistake IMHO!
