What a jerk! Anyone deal with this buyer?

So...over the last two weeks an Ebay buyer "delococo" racks up 11 cards from me (almost $1300). He asks for an invoice...and then another with insurance. My stated shipping rate is $4 for the first card and $1 for each additional card. I do a really nice job packaging...putting my graded cards in a bubble sleeve inside of a bubble mailer. I don't think that's unreasonable comparatively. It didn't bother me that he waited two weeks to pay for some of the cards. However, he sends me a nasty email after receiving the invoice with insurance:

Sorry, but I am still trying to checkout on these (11) items and I am getting a whopping $17.00 to ship and another $12.70 to insure this order. That is a total of almost $30 to ship and insure...! As soon as I receive a revised invoice for a FAIR and REASONABLE shipping, I will take care of payment - otherwise, just send me the agreement to Mutually Dissolve the transaction and I will make sure I do not bid on any more of your items in the future. Thanks, Robert

He was $3 off on his claim for the shipping rate ($14)...and the insurance was to the penny what USPS charges. What a jerk. Has anyone else had any dealings like this with him? I was debating banning him from bidding on my items. I'd rather sell my cards for less to a nice person than make a couple bucks more selling them to a douche. I ended up charging him $10 to ship the cards plus the stated insurance to avoid any more headaches. After packaging materials (box/bubble wrap), I ended up losing money mailing the cards out to him. I see now from his feedback that he has had issues with sellers in the past concerning shipping rates. Just wondering what the board thinks. It realls ticks me off.

By the way, I have 28 cards ending tonight...really nice ones ('48 Leaf SP PSA 6 Kell rookie and assorted Kell cards, the better part of my Kaline collection in PSA 8, 2 super rare PSA high graded Heilmann American Caramel cards, John Hiller, Willie Horton, Fergie Jenkins rookies, A killer PSA 8 Reggie rookie and '70, Hugh Jennings high graded T206 and CRACKER JACK, and a Greenberg)

Outstanding graded cards for sale ending tonight!!!

I wouldn't have budged for him.
  • If you used just delivery confirmation he can tell Paypal he never recieved them and will win the dispute

BTW 30.00 to ship 1300.00 worth of cards is not that bad. I would not have budged and WOULD NOT HAVE FILED MUTUAL. Buyers like this are the ones who need to be taken care of before May.

I would have charged him your stated amount, negged him, and then blocked him from future auctions.

INS OVER $200 REQUIRES A SIGNATURE...
  • I'm not sure if that's correct. I've been involved with Paypal disputes on both a card that did not arrive and a card that I sold that the buyer claimed did not arrive...both cases coming down to the absence of delivery confirmation...not signature confirmation. That was the last card I sold that I didn't use delivery confirmation. When speaking to a Paypal rep at both instances, I was told that as long as delivery confirmation is used, Paypal will back the seller's claim. I know that I'm safe using both delivery confirmation and full insurance.
  • No you are not anything over 200 dollars has to be sent with signature confirmation.
  • I'm not sure I understand- your stated shipping rates would've come to $14, so why did you charge him $17? I probably would've just paid it because it's an insignificant amount, but he's got a point if your auctions state one amount and you charge a higher amount.
  • He was incorrect about the $17. The amount was $14. He was just whining.

You must have trackable online proof of delivery from an approved shipper to the address on the Transaction Details page. For transactions involving $250.00 USD or more, you must provide a proof of receipt that was signed or otherwise acknowledged by the buyer and can be viewed online, (If you paid in a currency other than US dollars, the following amounts apply for this section: $325.00 CAD, €200.00 EUR, £150.00 GBP, ¥28000.00 JPY, $350.00 AUD, 330.00 CHF, 1,600.00 NOK, 2,000.00 SEK, 1,500.00 DKK, 800.00 PLN, 55000.00 HUF, 6,000.00 CZK, $400.00 SGD, $2,000.00 HKD, $380.00 NZD), and

Insurance of that amount has to be signed for but cannot be view online.
  • Whats scares me the most is that buyers such as this guy who will spend $1300 on their collection than go into a rage over $5 shipping difference will really be going "Nuts" when the EBAY policy of Sellers being unable to leave feedback to control their comments goes into effect. Its going to get ugly out there.

Me personally I would have sent you $30 or more to have my package sent registered mail with Insurance but hey thats me.
  • OK, got it. The guy's a screwball.
  • That why I would not have budged on the shipping and would not have filed mutual like the buyer wanted him to do. Its too risky all he has to do is hit the "wrong" button and the seller gets nothing. Plus the seller did not want to end this at all. I would have filed and hoped it was enough to get the buyer booted.

I've heard of him, he bids on some items I bid on. Seems like he's pretty active on ebay.
I bought your '69 Johnny Bench card. It looks great, I agree you do a nice job packaging. It got here safe and sound and I already posted a scan on the mail call thread. image
  • Thanks Darin. I'm glad you're enjoying the card and appreciate the packaging job. That's what it's all about. I sell and package the way I would want my cards to be handled.
  • Just a question... when shipping gets that high why not just use UPS Ground shipping would that not be safer than the USPS? Anytime I have multiple auction winners I'll just take it to the UPS store, their tracking seems to be much better than USPS. Plus shipping normally works out to be a little cheaper.
    image
  • That's a good suggestion. I'll check into it next time.
  • Personally I would eat some of the costs and ship it registered mail. It probaly would have been a bit cheaper and would be the safest way to get it there.

Just my .02 but $14 for 11 cards seems awfully high. The insurance is what it is, not much you can do about that. Whenever I get people buying multiple cards and it crosses the $5 mark (2.50 for the first, 50 cents each add'l), I upgrade them to priority because I get a pound for the $5. If it gets to be more than that, I toss them in a flat rate box for $9. To save on shipping costs, I keep the peanuts from BBCE whenever I order stuff from them (I've got a garbage bag filled), and I also keep the boxes from my psa submissions as well as the bubble wrap. The only supplies I have to pay for are bubble mailers which is what helps keep my costs down.

  • Your rates are clearly stated in your auction. Period.

    Why back down?
  • I agree that your rates are clearly stated.

it's one of those things man, if they dont like your terms, they shouldnt have bid. PERIOD.

It's just like when everyone was diggin on me for my 24 hour payment policy that was "unreasonable" but I got a positive from each and every happy buyer.

My terms were clearly stated, if they didnt like paying within 24 hours (or in your case, paying your shipping) then they should not have bid.

That's just the way it is.

  • I hope you have not shipped yet, because Leiascards is right about sig. confirmation. If you have shipped you will lose a case with Paypal if he disputes. I agree with envoy, $14 in shipping for eleven cards is pretty high, you should have a cap on that. For $1300 I would have shipped for free registered.

Nice cards though, I have been watching your a few of your cards.

and yes this guy has a few screws loose, he probably still burns ants with a magnifying glass!!

You should have charged him $14. The buyer is under no obligation to purchase insurance because you as a seller are responsible for delivering the product.

You still charged him $22 to ship 11 cards.

His e-mail was not nasty at all.

  • jlzinckjlzinck Posts: 909 ✭✭
Here is where you are wrong.

    From your auction listing:
Nicely packaged shipping will be a flat $4.00 (including delivery confirmation) to anywhere in the continental US. Insurance is up to you. That will be extra. Shipping to Canada will be $7 and Europe will be $15. Please do not bid on this auction if you have zero feedback or a feedback rating of less than 10 with negative feedback for non-payment. Additional cards can be shipped for only $1 more per card.

As I said it is YOUR responsibility to make sure the item arrives.

You need to change your template in need be to something like:
All auctions require insurance and will be added into the shipping charge.

If I was bidding on an auction with a shipping description like yours I would pay for shipping only. If the item never arrived or arrived damaged you would need to make it right.

Your right about the insurance unless its posted in the auction as some sellers do but as I stated before I have on more than one occasion bought graded cards on EBAY that have been in the $1300 range and higher and speaking only for myself I could care less about what the shipping costs/Ins etc that are listed on the auction. I will pay the extra costs involved to get my items which I obviously want seeing I bid big bucks to get them and if that means Registered/Fed Ex UPS whatever its no big deal IMO. The other side is also true that the seller can absolve the $10 or so difference from what his auction states but I tend to take it out of his hands and get the most secure shipping I can when it comes to high priced additions to my sets. Bottom line for me get them safely to my home.

Sig confirmation is required for over $250. However since this package was insured it will have to be signed for. It's one thing to scam PayPal and a seller, it's a totally different ballgame to try to pull an item not received on an insured USPS package.

  • This is just me and I do not make a living selling on ebay but if 1 person won 11 auctions with the final price around $1,300 and he was willing to pay on time and quickly I would offer to reduce the shipping price to around $10 or so. Do you really need to make money off shipping? I'm sure you do a great job packaging but why not cut the guy a break and keep a good customer?

I do the same thing envoy98 does and save all the old shipping stuff that I get, all the PSA supplies and BBCX stuff.

But I do agree with you the buyer does seem demanding and that is a little annoying.

Short answer is yes. It takes time to package things properly. It sounds like there are potentially less costly shipping options, but $24 on a $1300 order isn't bad. Lot of people gladly pay $3 on a $5 order.

Also JP could have used the 8.95 priority mail rate.

Add that to the insurance and 20.00 could have been the total.

With all that said his description stated 4.00 for the first card and 1.00 per extra card won. Insurance is extra if desired.

The seller while under no obligation to purchase insurance regardless of what the seller
says (when using paypal) said he wanted to purchase it.

I sold a card the other night (started at 469.00) that sold for 605.00 (no starting auctions at .99 for me) And I will charge the buyer 3.50 and I'll
    eat the signature and insurance.

If I was JP I'd of stated:

Hi, I can use priority mail flat rate box and that costs 8.95, your insurance is 12.00 (USPS rates)

    How does 22.00 sound?

    Thanks for all your purchases.
    /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    But that is just me.

Just to be clear JP did nothing wrong.

If you look at his feedback left, he has a habit of leaving negs for shipping costs, even when they were listed in the auctions. Looks like a neg for each auction.

If he files a paypal chargeback PM me with the DC or Insured number and I can probably get you an online copy of his signature if you need it.

I would rather have a repeat customer and be know as someone that is a fair shipper than know as a seller that jacks up their shipping cost. But I guess we are just different. Just because everyone does it does not mean it's the right thing to do.

Why should an order cost $24 to ship? Several people have given good examples fair shipping options for much less.

Not sure what Registered mail would have cost, but the cheapest I came up with was 20.00-22.00

The buyer exagerated the total the seller was close at 24.00

The issue here is the cheapskate buyer.

It seems this buyer likes to renegotiate after the deal is made. Shipping charges are clearly stated. If you don't like it don't bid. This conduct is SOP to this buyer. Over time he saves a bit on shipping which adds up but loses reputation, which I feel is more important.
On a side note some of the best deals I got were from sellers with noticably high shipping rates. There were fewer people bidding on their items.

  • To ship a small 4 lb package via UPS Ground from Chicago to LA would cost $9.86 - not sure how much extra it would be to insure $1,300.
    image
  • the buyer is clearly a douchebag.
the seller offered fair and reasonable shipping terms. this is the reason why the new feedback policy is crap.
  • Thanks for all of the props. To those who think the rate is unfair, all I can say is that with delivery confirmation, priority mail (I was told this would be less than 1st class) and insurance, the bill was about $22 for the one package. The seller paid me $22.70. The box and bubble wrap was probably about $1 plus change. He should have paid me the $26. The insurance was up to him.

If he leaves me positive feedback, I won't block him. He's got a high bid on one of my cards, so I dropped him a polite note that his renoegotiation tactics would not work this time around or on any additional items. If he wishes to buy my cards, he should do so knowing that the shipping and payment terms are to be upheld. I also gave him the option to cancel his bid without any hard feelings.

I wonder how much "negotiation" will happen after the end of auctions once the new FB policy is in place??? It's going to be a scammers world on ebay.

I see two things wrong here.

    1. Are you actually being serious saying that he should have paid you $26 because of the box and bubble wrap? If you are that is just cheap on your part, proper padding should be built into cost; hence your $4 charge on a first card to ship a card first class that weighs 3oz. in two padded envelopes and cost a whopping $1.68

    2. "If he leaves me positive feedback, I won't block him" This guy needs to be blocked and I am betting that he will not leave you positive feedback. Good luck with that though.
  • cole-

I am saying that he should have paid me $26, because that was the advertised rate. There's nothing cheap about that...and I don't think that my rate is unreasonable. I've paid some jerkoffs $6-8 for one card that did not include extra padding or delivery confirmation. 4SC charges $8 for three cards.

While there is no question that the buyer is a douche the above is my only problem with your listing.

You leave yourself open to chargebacks and loss of funds if you do this because any smart buyer will get their $$ back if something you ship arrives damaged even if they refuse insurance.

This will not change unless you build the insurance into the price of shipping.

    Just a heads up.

I would block the guy anyway because he will do it again if he wins any of your auctions.

"This will not change unless you build the insurance into the price of shipping."

    /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

No matter how many times this is repeated, many sellers
simply do not grasp the concept. It often takes a HUGE
loss at the hands of PayPal to get a seller's attention.

If you cannot con the buyer into paying for insurance, the
ONLY prudent play is to pay for it yourself. NO exceptions.

While I agree some sellers way over charge for stuff that does not give me the right to over charge for shipping...

you did the right thing, you charged the buyer just what it cost to ship the card out.

also please note I'm not sidding with your buyer he new what he was getting into and he acted like tool!
