Is this a Japanese coin?

On it's cardboard holder is written, "Japan, 1863-67, Kan-ei Tsuho"

Any information and/or possible value of the coin would be appreciated.

Thanks.......

  • The information you have is partially correct.

The "11 wave" 4 mon coin (C#4.2) was cast in both copper and brass for nearly 100 years (1769-1860), in uncounted millions. They are very common and available today, and catalog at <$1 unless they are in superb, pristine condition.

Similar coins, with somewhat different characters on the obverse, were cast subsequently, right up to the first few years of the Meiji Era. One of those was indeed cast during the period written on your holder.

    Satootoko is correct. It's a Kan'ei tsuuhoh 1 mon.

    Upside-down waves make me seasick.
