2008 Topps - Ugliest Cards Ever!

Sorry if there's already a topic on this. I don't collect modern cards but every year I buy a few packs of Topps just to rip them and to check out the design. This has got to be the ugliest design ever! Bland with cheasey Vegas looking team lettering. Does anyone like this design?

  • I do! Which cards did you get, you might have some gems in there.
  • I didn't think 2007 Topps were the bell of the ball either. Despite the designs though, I think alot of the eye appeal has to do with the photography these days. And because of that, I think there's some great looking cards in the last two issues.

I agree, bad design. I wish they wouldn't just cookie cutter the design from year to year and actually make the cards distinct every year. It seems they just change the color and move the names around and done.

  • I think the 08 cards are much better than the 07 ones. But as far as Topps goes, 1987 will always be the best!!

There have definitely been some ugly designs over the years. However, this one strikes me as the worst. I actually cringed when I opened the pack. I don't recall the 2007 design. Perhaps I forgot to buy packs last year.
  • 1981's are masterpieces compared to 2008 ane especially 1990; talk about FUGLY!

Why try when all you have to do is stamp numbers on the back and affix jock strap swaths to please the vast majority of you?

    Over heard during proofing:

Exec 1: "Man, these are ugly"
Exec 2: "Yeah, but we are going to include mystery Roger Clemens roid gauz swatches limited to 50"
Exec 1: "I can picture 30 something buffoons trying to hide blasters at Target"
Exec 2" "Works like a charm, we could wrap excrement in foil and they would buy it"
Exec 1: You're right, what was I worried about...Roll Em!"

    Loves me some shiny!

Why do most of your posts try to jabs at the board members. You seem to do that a lot and it gets kind of old.

The exact same only black instead of white. Those 4 little squares on each corner must be the owner's son's idea or something, cuz they are not cool.

P.S. I hope I'm thinking of the right '08 issue, those are white with the little color squares in the corners right? image

I actually think the bubble thing at the top is kind of funky, like a throwback to something you'd see in the mid 70s. The rest of the card could use some help. Topps never seems to pick an appealing font that is complimentary to the rest of the design. I think this year is at least an attempt to be creative rather than the bland "Let's put everything in silver or gold" designs of the last 15 years.

  • Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I like both the 2007 and 2008 designs. The 2007 design was nice and simple, and a black background is good every 20 years or so (1986, 1971, etc). The chrome lettering with the black made it look clean and simple.

The 2008 set returns to a white border, and the team lettering at the top kind of has a retro look. I don't like the drop down 'Topps' area in the photo, but they have to have their name on there or we would confuse them with any of the other card companies out there. image

  • I liked 2007. I wish they'd get rid of foil stamping and the high gloss. Gives the cards a cheap feel to me.

  • I don't like the new Topps as much as the UD, but it's still good. The UD not having a border at all is sweet. The less border plus more photo equals a nice card to me.

    TOPPS - 1982 to 1987 - WHAT I THOUGHT THEN. WHAT I THINK NOW

I've noticed that my thoughts about card designs can wildly flip-flop over time...

1982 Topps - THEN: I though they were super-sharp, almost "technological". NOW: Bland and dated.

1983 Topps - THEN: I though they were a pitiful copy of 1963. NOW: I prefer the '83 design over the '63.

1984 Topps - THEN: Much cooler than the '83s. NOW: Poor ripoff of '83

1985 Topps - THEN: Really cool, nice photos. NOW: Bland photos and ugh, the billboard team names!

1986 Topps - THEN: SWEET modern design! Much preferred over '71. NOW: '71 kicks '86s arse.

1987 Topps - THEN: Nice, crisp, clean throwback to '62. NOW: Corny ripoff of '62.

I like them. First time in 14 years they didn't put gold or silver foil on the face of the cards -- a welcome change. I think they have a 1970s look to them.
    Enjoy your collection!

I love this design! It has a nice vintage style to it IMO!

It wasn't a major hit with me either.

Not sure but I think - like the 82T set is called the 'hockey stick' design - people may be called the 2008 the "party baloon set" design.

I guess they were looking for simplicity?

I like this years set but already sick of looking at them cause I bought too many image
  • Personally, I absolutley loved the 2007 design. Best I think they have had in years. They followed that up with a great 2008 design. Another one that is better than they have had in years.
