How do you deal with people who claim they didnt receive a card?

I just had my first Paypal charge back from someone who says they didnt receive an $11 card. I've heard of the stories in the past but it never happened to me before. In 9 yrs Ive had 3 packages go AWOL. All 3 were mailed the same day. Now I have some buyer who Ive never seen bid before tell me he thinks I didnt ship his card. Well I guess its time to either make everyone pay insurance or do I just say its part of business. What have you guys done if its happened to you?

For three years you have not had a problem, no need to change now, it may be another three years before it happens again. You have probably made 100 times that amount in the small profits from overcharging for shipping (many charge $3.00 to ship a card with an actual cost of about $1.50). It really does not make sense to charge all future customers extra money for insurance, require 24 payment, only combine one days worth of purchases, etc... all these types of conditions send many buyers on to the next auction without bidding on yours.

Did you have delivery confirmation? You should ship every item with a delivery confirmation, this would go a long way towards avoiding this from happening again and it only costs you $0.18 cents

I started doing this after someone "claimed"(geopass) they didn't receive card, it's relatively cheap to put a tracking # on.

Delivery confirmation simply means the postal guy put the package in the addressee's mail box/your front door area, or tossed it somewhere close. It does NOT mean the recipient got the piece. The best way to go is to utilize "signature required", that ends all the hassle and he said/he said problems. Might cost more, but it totally eliminates the challenge.

Be thankful it was just an $11 card I suppose. Still irritating though, especially when you know you made good on your end. I've had cards take more than 3 weeks to get to me, hopefully this is the situation with your deal.

    GL resolving the situation.

DC will insure paypal won't charge back regardless of what the PO guy does with the package.

Well it will be just part of business or $0.18 . For some reason I thought you could only DC Priority Mail. Guess I'm wrong. The funny thing is I have 14 more of the same card in the same grade (PSA 8) and he didnt want a replacement, just a refund.

You can DC 1st class mail but it has to be at least a certain thickness. It is 18 cents only online.
If the mailer is not thick enuff the PO will make u upgrade to priority mail.

at the PO it is .75.

I charge 3.50 for a graded card mailed and that way I have enuff dough to cover everything.

    Postage 1.47
    DC 75
    insurance 1.00
    mailer 25
    -------------------

    3.47 total
    Good for you.

Yeah it sounds like he knew how to work the system.

he saw that you had no DC and used that to get a free card.

Sorry that happened to you but like it was mentioned better it was only 11.00

also for sales over 250.00 you need a signature not DC

Yes, I believe it is 3/4" thick minimum to go 1st class.

Yeah - I jumped my shipping from $1.50 to $2.50 for a single graded card about 2 years ago so I could add delivery confirmation to each package. Most people are honest about getting their card - but there are always a couple trying to get something for nothing.

    $.75 on 1st class & $.65 on priority mail

I sent a group of graded cards to a buyer and he claimed he did not recieve even though it was confirmed as delivered.I am now using signature confirmation on higher ticket items I send out.

I print every label from paypal so the buyers get the email when I print it, they also get the tracking number. I put up to two graded cards in a single #00 bubble mailer and tape the label on it. It takes longer and I use a lot of ink and paper but the extra money I spend is worth it. I've had people claim they didn't get packages that were delivered a day or two earlier. Then I prove it to them and they say "Oh, it was in a stack of mail that I didn't see" or "oh, that's my parent's address". Well, it's your confirmed address so that's where it went.

On an $11 card, I'd ask them to wait up to 21 days for it to be delivered. (Thats the longest I've had something take, except for one package to Canada). After that, I'd just refund the money if I had no proof of delivery.

By the way, to use DC on any first class package, it has to be 3/4" thick. It's .18 cents if you do it from PayPal using their shipping or .75 if you go to the post office and put a green sticker on it. PLus the PO loves you if you just drop stuff off and they don't have to ring it all in.
  • I didn't read all the replies but if he only wants a refund...my money is on him having received it. Also, he knows you didn't use Delivery Confirmation and knew he'd win a Paypal dispute. Mailing anything with out DC is like sending cash to pay for an item. Trust is all you have and with a dishonest person....yer screwed.

ALWAYS use delivery confirmation when accepting Paypal. I've never lost a dispute where I used DC since I started selling on eBay...ashamed its been so long I can't even remember how many years....

    Mike

BTW, Paypal will print shipping labels with postage and DC. For bubble envelopes and one graded card the shipping is under $2 with DC.

so i guess i am doing the same thing with an $5 card that I havent gotten yet. I must be taking the seller for a ride, because that is what all ebay buyers must be doing when they file a claim. on my end i have never heard back the from the seller at all. i email first that i havent gotten the item after 3-4 weeks post pay pal. i give a week for their reply then file with paypal. now i have to escalate the claim since i havent heard back. but as you suggest i am just scamming the seller. after all no seller would either never forget to send something or never plan on it either. its funny how i usually get the item after the email, yet they say that they sent it right away but the post mark indicates otherwise. but again only ebay buyers are bad people on ebay.

it seems like the over riding theme is that ebay buyers are out to pull the wool over the sellers. if you dont think that is what was said here then just go ahead and re-read the first few sentences of the post that i quoted in my first response.

I did, I re read them 5 times.

Did you read what Gaspipe said?

Listen, no need for you to over react, of course not all ebayers are bad.

The person you quoted was just giving his opinion. He didn't say anything about you.

Where exactly did he say 'all ebayers'??

I sent Wondo some cards a few months back in a plain white envelope (I know, dumb move). He received the envelope, but someone at the post office had removed the cards. Many hands touch the mail before it gets to the end user, so to assume that the buyer received the card and is lying when he says he didn't receive it is only one of many possibilities.

Your situation is quite different. Since you asked I'll expand on my point.

If a BUYER agrees to buy a card and after finding out that the card is lost/destroyed/whatever wants a refund rather than a second card mailed; and knowing the package was sent WITHOUT DELIVERY CONFIRMATION; it is very logical to conclude that the buyer's change in demand for the card is a result of him/her having received the card. If the buyer gave some logical reason for wanting a refund such as wanting the card for a birthday or Christmas present and that time has past, then I might conclude differently.

To the point of your situation: You have a seller who is not responding to emails and so you question his ability or interest in competing the deal. I would act exactly as you did and request a refund.

The difference is in the details.

    Mike

PS. I both buy and sell maybe $500 a month, combined, on ebay so I have quite a bit of experience on both sides of this arguement.

That has happened to me a couple of times and I have learned my lesson the hard way. I believe the guy is just trying to get the card for free. I would be doing back flips knowing that my mistake only cost me $11. For him not to want the card now is very suspicious.

I only spend the DC fee if the item is worth over $40 or the buyer has little or low feedback. I have rolled the dice this way for 3000 transaction without a loss........even if two in a row suddenly got lost I am way ahead of the game.

    See the updated thread.
  • As a purchaser I have had a half dozen cards not appear in the mail over the last 2 yrs. I have all of my mail delivered to my office, and literally have made hundreds of purchases, generally without a hitch. Still, six cards not appearing is beyond the realm of "random error" at the post office. I cannot help but notice that the 6 times this has happened have ALL been on cards that I was the sole bidder on and therefore got for very cheap (e.g., $8.00 for a PSA 9 '69 Topps FB common). I have taken to leaving Neutral feedback in each such instances noting that the card did not arrive and that my money was refunded. This has prompted "flaming neutrals" in return; but I think it is a fair way of addressing the issue from both sides. If everyone did this, we would quickly be able to figure out who the problem sellers and purchasers are by the number of "no delivery"/"claims didn't receive card" neutrals in a person's profile. Just my modest proposal.
