Help on French Coins

Hello,

Looking for information on these coins. Have not really collected foreign coins but they came along with the group.

Thanks.

The first is an 1874 French 5 Francs from the Third Republic from the Bordeaux mint with an anchor engraver privy mark and a cross mint privy mark. KM #820.2 25.0 grams of .900 silver .7234 asw. In that condition its worth melt

The second is a 1873 Belgium 5 Francs, KM #24. 25.0 grams of .900 silver .7234 asw This coin can be collected by the edge lettering orientation, referred to as Pos A and Pos B. (the same as the new US President dollars). Pos A would be worth melt. Pos B orientation is worth quite a bit more - my old Krause lists this at $75/Fine

The edge letter orientation is backwards from what would seem logical - Pos B is with the Portrait side up the edge letters are upright.

The engraver of the Belgium coin is Leopold Wiener - who was a renown medalist and is more famous for his cathedral medals.

The 1st is a French 5 Francs. 4,000,000 minted, about 3/4 ounces of silver. VF $11 in Krause 4th.
The 2nd is a Belgium 5 Frank. It has the same silver content as the above coin. 22,341,000 minted. There are 2 varieties of this coin. It all has to do with the edge lettering. Position A: coins with the portrait side down having upright lettering. Position B: portrait facing up having upright lettering. The latter being the less common and would command a small premium in that grade which would be vf+. Krause has vf @$17.50. -Dan
