Let's play a guessing game with two 1975 Hostess Nolan Ryan cards.

As some of you may remember I recently submitted 2 1975 Hostess Nolan Ryan cards and received a PSA 9, and a PSA 10. I see no difference in the 2 cards, but im going to show all of you both cards and see if you can tell them apart or see any difference. Here they are:

    or right 9 left 10..

    either way I WIN!
  • I'd say the card on the right is the 10 (which would all but guarantee its the card on the left....)

Guesses are cool, but I would love to here a little reasoning too so maybe I could see something I missed.

The card on the left appears slightly bigger. So it gets the ten. image

Truthfully you are going to have to live with fact that you could re-submit them both and the grades could be swapped. Or gasp you might get an 8.

Sell the ten. Keep the nine.
  • I think the 10's on the left.

    Hi Nick

I'ld be lying if I said I could tell by the scan.

I bet if I held them in my hand, I wouldn't be able to tell.

Those are rock solid grades - you did a great job cutting them out!

And I agree with the idea of selling the 10 if ya can part with it.

There's many experienced card collectors who believe the difference between a 9 and a 10 is at the whim of the grader in some instances.

Good luck on the sale - sweet cards!

  • Better focus and brightness on right....although that could be the scan. These are very condition sensitive as far as surface goes so I would guess you have surface scrathes on one that would not show in a scan.

Most PSA 10's I have seen hand cut have smaller boarder between the dotted line and the cut, than between the card and the dotted line. Did that make sense? Less boarder outside the line...so I would guess PSA would like the cut of the card on the right better. If that is what is holding the left card back I would recut the right side to match the left.

    Just my 2 cents.

I have a bunch of panels to cut for my puckett registrey and I was thinking about using wife's scrapbooking stuff?? What did you use to cut your panel?

I like the one on the right as a 10. I like the centering on the dotted lines at the corners. Looks more parallel than the one on the left.
  • I think the 10 is on the right, the excess outside the border is closer to being uniform thickness. I remember when they first talked about the guidelines they were looking for on handcut cards, they wanted the card cut as close to the black lines as possible without cutting into the card. It now appears they may have changed that.

After reading some of the comments, I now agree with the fact that I left the right border too thick on the card on the left. The card on the right is the PSA 10. Thanks to all that took the time to look.
  • What did you use to cut them? Its always good to hear on handcut cards when someone gets a 10 on what method they used. I've used a clear drafting triangle and a razorblade before, but know some have had success with scissors.

Since I had 6 of them to cut, and with PSA 10's bringing good money, I didn't want to take the chance of hacking them up. After doing some research, and figuring that if I got a PSA 10 or 2 it would pay for itself, I bought one of those cutters with the arm that goes up and down.

The cost wasn't too bad, and it will serve a dual purpose since I have a 2 year old and she gets pictures taken about 3 times a year (Birthday, Christmas, and Easter) that have to be cut from sheets to give out to relatives. Also, now I have new things to look for at card shows like uncut Hostess panels and uncut Post issues.

Jay never use scissors, you will not be able to get a complete cut.

The guillotine type that Nick mentioned is useful as is this new type they have that a razor slides back and forth.

Nick is the BLC on the 9 soft? or is it the scan?

I did not think the border being larger is a problem.

left 9 right 10 better centering..

  • << <i>Jay never use scissors, you will not be able to get a complete cut. >>

Yeah I personally would never use scissors, but I know some people have and the results were higher than I would expect. McGwire is on about 20 different issues that I need to be handcut, so I always pay attention to any handcut threads to see what other methods people have success with. I personally use a drafting triangle and razor blades, but I have been thinking about getting a cutter.

Jay look into the one I was talking about, it has a flatbed a ruler and a slide with a razor.

Definitely not soft with that cutter I used, and it doesnt appear to have been damaged by accident at PSA, so im guessing its just the scan.
  • I thought the one on the left was the 9. the cut seems better (more straight) on the psa 10
