Can anyone tell me about the six Specimen 1927 Buffs NGC Certifed?

Looking through the census on their website, and it shows they have certified six 1927 Buffalo Nickels as Specimens all SP65. Anyone seen one or have more information? Thanks in advance.

Get a copy of David Lange's book on Buffalo Nickels, he has 3 pages on it. He states they look similar to the 1936 Satin Finish nickel, and were believed to come out of Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock's estate.

Any pic of these? Not a buff guy, but this sounds interestingimage
  • I do know that they all share a common reverse die with the satin finish proof of 1936. That is to say they all have a die line running somewhat horizontal off of the motto "In God We Trust".

That alone would lead one to think they were made sometime after 1936 or so.

As RWB said, these are believed to be the result of experiments with chromium plated dies. I know Larry Whitlow once owned one of these, but I've never seen one in-hand.

Wouldn't it be just as likely that the specially prepared 1927 reverse die was relegated to storage and then repurposed 9 years later for the satin proof 1936?.

I think that would be much more likely.
