Do you think that high end collectors vacation from Ebay when the listing sale hits?

When putting my cards up, I always try to stay away from the glut of high priced cards that appear during the discounted listing days on Ebay. It doesn't seem like a lot of those cards get purchased, but they do make it seems like some of the rarer cards are in heavier supply than normal. I know I always tried to avoid ebay when the mass listing hit...or tried to find the nuggets that were sandwiched in between the bulk listings which got less attention and went for better prices. I unfortunately put a stack of really cool rare stuff up a day before the listing special that seems to not have been as aggresively received as normal. I've got a razor sharp Bob Gibson and Freehan rookie, high end Gehringers and Goslins (including a rarer than rare WWG)...all of which are not seen too often on ebay...unless the floodgate opens. Do you think that the high end graded vintage collectors stay away from ebay at these times?

Yes, except those who feed at the Levi trough.

I don't think most buyers are aware of Ebays listings. I think they buy when they want to buy.

I love looking through the "glut" of listings that get posted on those days. More than once, I've found an awesome BIN deal.

  • I occasionally looked, but it was a fast skim. Levi always used a serail # which makes it easier to skim though his stuff.

    Yup.

MOST buyers have no idea when there is a listing special.
They just think there is alot of stuff listed.

  • Maybe because I was always on a daily hunt my perspective is jaded? I have about 100-120 seaches in my bookmarks that I did almost every day. Do you not think that a lot of larger collection, big money spending buyers are daily lurkers on ebay?

    Yup.

And, you are not "jaded." You're just into buying collectibles on EBAY.

Collectible buyers tend to be more aware of how EBAY
is operating, than are buyers in other categories.

The best time for me to list things are those times.

Properly priced items sell when compared to the guys that

    list at top dollar.

My best weeks on ebay coincide with those weeks.

And don't sell Levi short he does very well during those listing times too.

    Good for you.

I have my want list entered into my vcp account, and it provides me with a link whenever one of the cards gets listed- whether it's ebay, mastro, REA, or any other major auction site. As such dump days have no effect, since there really isn't a need to do searches anymore.
I think if you're looking for a card that rarely comes up for your collection you either do the same thing or have your search set in a way that doesn't bring up a lot of unrelated stuff.

Someone must be looking...I sell more cards out of my eBay store during the weeks that there are seller sales than weeks that don't.
