    I agree,
Not many cards look better with autos than Allen & Ginter. Nice stuff.

You need to Find Atlee Hammaker for the double auto on that 84 with Honeycutt

  • I'm hoping to post some pictures tomorrow, but wanted to give this report before I forgot stuff. Just got back yesterday from a trip to see Reds vs Red Sox, Yankees, and Pirates. My son only wanted Reds autographs, but we didn't try real hard. At the Yankees game he collected a couple of balls during batting practice. Then he noticed a 2-year old kid sitting with his mother on the first row near him. He gave one of his balls to the kid and the mother thought it was very nice. A few minutes later she grabbed one of the balls he was trying to get signed and said "I'll be right back". About 20 minutes later she comes back and says "I'm sorry I couldn't get the whole team. They're kind of busy getting ready for the game." She hands me a ball signed by one of the Reds. I ask if she's related and she says that it's her husband. Then she says, "If you give me your address I'll try to send you a ball signed by the whole team". I don't want to reveal the name and have her/him bombarded with requests. It wasn't a superstar, but still a really nice experience. I'm not holding my breath, but I sure would like to receive a ball in the mail.

We got there two hours before the game. Griffey was standing against the right field wall talking with two guys in the stands. There were about 5 kids there begging him to sign. He stood there talking for about 15 minutes, never signed, and then ran back into the locker room. Dunn also never signed. The best signers were Dusty Baker, Brandon Phillips, Freel (a few), Joey Votto, Eric Davis, and Encarnacion (a few). Same pattern before the Pirates game.

That's a sweet story. Who was the Red that you got the ball of? Hopefully you get something in the mail, and I can't wait to see someone else's pictures!

By the way guys, me and my dad just got tickets for the Dodgers vs. Marlins, next Sunday the 16th, in what will be the last game I ever see the Dodgers play in Dodgertown. It sounds stupid, but I'm sure some emotions will be running through me when I drive away after seeing Dodger blue out on the field for the last time. The great thing is our seats! FIRST row next to the Dodger bullpen! The squad will be somewhat split up, with some of the guys being in China, but it should still be great. I know when I spoke with Matt Kemp, he said that him, Andruw, Nomar and Hu are the only ones that he could think of that are going to China. Off topic, but he also got a SWEET new tattoo on his left arm of a dove. I've been trying to find recent pictures of him online (of the past week) and haven't seen it in any photos.

Some semi-good news: I spoke with two security guards (both at different times) about the move out to AZ, and asked if anyone would be moving in to Dodgertown after LA leaves, and both said that as of right now it seems like Baltimore will get it. Great to hear that someone will move in eventually. Just to show you how hard this hits my area, the Florida Today newspaper had the story of the Dodgers leaving on the front page of the whole paper. One interesting thing to note though,is that LA isn't even sure their complex out in Glendale will be finished in time and may have problems this time next year. Serves em right for leaving.....image

Goot, not stupid at all about emotions running rampant while leaving Dodgertown. Also, I thought Cleveland was a "done" deal in moving to AZ? It would be great for someone to take up this place as home but it just wouldn't be the same w/out the Dodgers and no, I'm not a Dodgers fan. Can anyone tell me if the Tigers vs. Indians is sold out for Sunday, the 23rd in Lakeland. It seems Ticketmaster doesn't have any tickets which is odd unless it's the Yanks or Red Soz playing the Tigers on a weekend. I see a couple sets on eBay but that's it.
  • Split squad Braves vs. Rays from Disney Wide World of Sports in Orlando. Only decent names for the Rays that made the trip were Reid Brignac, Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena, Dioner Navarro, Shawn Riggans and Jonny "I eat Yankees for breakfast" Gomes image. It was also the first start of the year for Smoltz, because he wanted his first 3 starts to be against minor leaguers so he could PERFECT his off speed stuff. If that's really the case, I'd be very afraid to face him this year.

Chipper the family man. Sorry for the quality, I was trying to get my camera out quickly which meant shaky hands:

I didn't try too hard for autos today because 1) I had a late night last night and didn't get to the park very early and 2) I felt like chillin and watching the game because next Saturday I'll be going all out when they come to play the Nationals on my home turf.

First round draft pick Jason Heyward.

I also got Brayan Pena, Terry Pendleton and Brent Lillibridge (again) but don't feel that those are really worth scanning.

Marlins @ Dodgers tomorrow, which means Andrew Miller vs. Derek Lowe!!!!!!!!!

    Great stuff Goot.

So what do you think of the Braves this year? Do you miss Jones? Can't get used him not being in a Braves uni.

I'm looking forward to seeing them back in the playoffs again.

For this year, I think we're a bit under the radar which is a first for this franchise. So much focus has been on the Mets and Phils that everyone has forgotten about the Braves. I'm not saying that we'll win the East this year, because that will take a lot of luck and few injuries, but I do think we have a legit shot at it and a very good shot at the wild card.

I'm definitely missing Jones this year. He was, and still is, one of my favorites while growing up and it sucks to have to let him go. However, the $18 million a year that he got was way too steep for the type of season had last year while we have guys waiting in the minors like Brandon Jones and Jordan Schafer (next year, 2009) who should be very good players.

Speaking of the CF situation, the more I think about it the more I dislike the Kotsay signing. Yes, he is a decent major leaguer and it should just be a rental position, but the guy hasn't been productive the last couple years and is injury prone. I'll take Brandon Jones or Josh Anderson who are healthy and can steal bases even if it means they would hit .250. Anderson makes $800 K this year, while I believe Kotsay makes $2.something million. Not a great move in my opinion. Now, if Kotsay puts up solid numbers, I'll delete my post and pretend I was a firm believer all along

  • Me and the old guy went down to Vero today to see the Dodgers play the Marlins. Had great seats right next to the Marlins bullpen but got up and moved around quite a bit because it was so hot. I'm pretty sure it was in the upper 80s with barely any clouds in the sky. Fun game to watch with Andrew Miller pitching vs. Derek Lowe. Dan Uggla and Jorge Cantu both hit DEEP bombs. Juan Pierre didn't even bother to chase after Cantu's, he simply turned around and watched it!

After the game, me and my dad went and got a quick bite to eat of Chinese food and then did our last little lap of the complex. I understand that it's not going to disappear any time soon, and that I'll still get to see it plenty of times over the summer for minor league games, but it just won't be the same without the guys in blue and white running the bases. The whole thing sounds kinda stupid and cheezy but it's hard to understand unless you've dealt with a team relocating before (Colts, Expos, or maybe even Dodgers/Giants).

    Anyways...here are the pics.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • So yesterday, me and my dad played a little hooky and drove over to the Tampa Bay area. First, we stopped at the Phillies vs. Rays Spring Training game in Clearwater. Cole Hamels pitched vs. Matt Garza and it as a no hitter for both pitchers until the bottom of the 4th or the bottom of the 5th inning. Evan Longoria and Geoff Jenkins (I think) both went yard. The Phils' ended up winning 4-2 but oh well.

After that was over we found a mall, got changed into something a little nicer than shorts and t-shirts and headed over to Tropicana Field for the Ted Williams Hall of Fame induction. We got there a little early and took a stroll through the museum itself even though I had already been there. It's two floors right at the entrance to the Trop with some amazing stuff in there. I ran out of time so I didn't even get a chance to get pictures of half the stuff in the place. I have some other pictures of the player displays but I only selected a couple to show you guys.

He's not in the hall yet, but there were 5 little displays of Rays players.

Before the dinner took place, there was a little autograph session. Johnny Pesky was supposed to show up, but one of the staff said that he is with either his wife or girlfriend in Houston right now because she is sick or something is happening there involving her. Other guys whose autos I did NOT get were Jesse Litsch, Josh Papelbon (little brother) and big time Sox prospect Justin Masterson. Here's what I did manage from it...

Roy White up top, Rivers in the Middle, 77-78 World Series Champs below...

    image

Ron Leflore was great to talk to. I read his book and he thanked me for reading the "greatest sports book ever written" in his joking words.
    image

Had no idea he was gonna be here, but they sold these 8X10s there for $5 so figured what the heck.
    image

Not many people there really knew who he was, but being a Bucs fan I was pretty stoked to get Micheal Spurlock.
    image

Now on to the ceremony. Papelbon and Okajima had to get on the plane to Japan so they left after dinner (which was amazing, steak, chicken, salad, soup, rolls, pasta and cheesecake). The won an award for winning the world series, not the hall of fame. Next up was Andre Dawson. He was inducted into the actual Williams Hall of Fame. Every single man that stepped up to the podium last night, meaning Wade Boggs, Reggie, Alomar, Gossage, etc., all started their speeches with something about how Dawson should be a HOFer and that the sports writers have screwed it up. Alomar was also inducted into the hall and Reggie called him the best 2nd baseman of his era and a future HOFer. Alomar told some stories about being in the clubhouse with his dad when he played for the Yanks, and even said that his one regret in life is to never put on the pinstripes. Gossage was honored for being inducted into the real HOF and spoke about some of the players that he faced and called George Brett the greatest hitter that he ever faced. Reggie and George Steinbrenner's daughter accepted the award for him because he couldn't be there and Reggie told some great stories about their relationship and even that he calls Mr. Steinbrenner "dad".

Throughout the night there was a silent auction going on with some truly remarkable stuff up. Ted Williams autographed 16x20's, Bob Feller autographed 8X10, autographed baseballs from the likes of Ryne Sandberg, Bob Gibson, and a few other HOFers, an autographed collage by Derek Jeter with pictures of him slamming his face into the first row as well as celebrating his walk off in the 01 world series. When I was up looking at some of the stuff, I was looking at a picture of Yankee stadium that had 18 autographs on it with the likes of Skowron, Billy Martin, Torre, Houk, Reggie, Chambliss, Goose, and other Yankee players from the 70s-80s, Mickey Rivers came walking up to me, put his hand on my shoulder turned to me and said "You know I'm better than all those guys right? They just got lucky." Then burst out into a huge grin with a hilarious laugh and walked off.

    Here are some pictures...

    Papelbon and Okajima
    image

    Reggie
    image

This was amazing. An artist came in from LA and painted these while the show was going on. All he used was his hands and just dipped them into paint. This was then auctioned off to benefit the museum, and was by Ted William's Daughter for $15,000!
    image

After the ceremony I managed to score this beaut...
    image
    image

And as for how that silent auction turned out, we went to leave after I got Gossage's autograph and my dad be lined it for the auction, came back and said "ok, we're good". I had no idea what he was talking about and he told me it was going to be a surprise. The auction ended 5 minutes later, my dad went up and paid, came back handed me this and said, "how bout two hall of famers tonight?". My jaw DROPPED.

  • I really appreciate the comments guys. I've experienced a ton of things that I'll just never forget like talking with the likes of Francoeur, Evan Longoria, Mickey Rivers, Ron Leflore, Tom Lasorda, Matt Kemp, etc. Sharing it all with my dad has been even more amazing and I count my blessings everyday because I know that I'm doing things at the age of 17 that some grown men can not say that they've done and it's all because of my dad. I asked him what made him bid on the Marichal ball (because I never even asked for him to bid on a single thing while there and if I want something, I normally buy it whether it's on ebay, etc. with my own money) and he told me that 1) I've earned it for doing well in school, staying out of trouble, and being a good son and that 2) He knows that I appreciate those things more than anyone else that he's ever met.

I may just be paranoid or something, but that is one thing that I am afraid of with this thread. I worry that some of you may think that I take some of these autographs or opportunities for granted and I come here to brag or something and I'm some teenage punk that doesn't appreciate the game. Every game I go to, I soak it up because I love the game of baseball and everything that goes into it. I can honestly say that I have never left a spring training game early for any reason other than autographs.

As for meeting these guys, I idolize almost every single one of these guys that I meet. I'm not a dealer out there trying to get autographs so I can sell them 20 years from now, I do it because I want to feel like I'm a part of the game and that the players know I'm here supporting them every step of the way. Most of the Hall of Famers that I meet I was never able to see play so I live vicariously through their stories. While some may think I have no idea who Marichal is and therefore don't deserve the ball for some odd reason, I can not help the fact that I was born 30 years too late. What I can say is that I study the game that those men played and by watching the numerous baseball documentaries that I own such as When it Was a Game or There is Always a Sun Shining Some Place (negro leagues), I become a great fan of many of these men that I never had the chance to witness. In many ways, I honestly admire you guys for just being able to say that you saw Steve Carlton pitch or you saw Hank Aaron swing the bat, just like my kids will hopefully look up to me one day in admiration of how the old guy was able to meet members of the hall of fame or able to turn on ESPN and watch A-Rod, Smoltz, Chipper, Cabrera, Crawford, etc. play the game.

    Thanx Goot

I've enjoyed your posts very much. My baseball experience starts with Ebbetts Field, the Pologrounds and old Yankee Stadium - so this has been a treat.

I was in school in NYC around '74 to '79 - so I went to quite a few Yankee games - sat in the bleachers for a 150!

I can still see them take the field - Munson catcher, Chambliss 1B, Randolph 2B, Dent SS, Nettles 3B, Pinella LF, Rivers CF and Jackson RF.

Roy White was a great utility player BTW - he played a lot of RF.

The Goose still has the same type stashe - Sparky Lyle was fun to watch back then - won the CY in '77 I believe.

When I was a kid in Tampa - going to the games was a treat - and of course it meant skipping school - like I cared! image

    Thanx again for sharing.

Hey Goot, not to turn this into a cheesy thread, but I totally get where your coming from. When I was your age, my Dad would take me everywhere to see baseball games, trips to the Hall of fame, and anywhere else we could find things to do with baseball. He took me to see Nolan Ryan pitch 5 times, and every other major star of the early-mid 80's. My Dad passed away quite unexpectedly last January. Last season was the first baseball I felt like i was watching by "myself" even though there were others to share it with, it was just not the same.
I know when I have kids I will do the same with them. It's great you and your Dad have such a bond over baseball. That is the reason I have liked this thread so much. It has brought back alot of memories of my childhood with my Dad.

  • I didn't take too many pics today because I was mainly concerned with autographs and to tell you guys the truth, I didn't feel like taking them image. Got Francoeur (AGAIN) inside the stadium on an A&G card, beautiful as always. I also got Matt Diaz on an 8x10 inside the stadium that looks nice as well. After the game I got CHIPPER Jones on his way to the bus. He didn't sign for too many people but I luckily got him on my bat and my dad got him further down the fence on a ball. I'm not very happy with the bat auto though. You can't tell in the picture because of glare and stuff, but in the upward curve of the J it looks like his hand shook or something and it goes from thin to thick a little. Oh well, I don't plan on selling it or anything and meeting him alone was good enough for me. Hopefully I'll get him again next year or something. Here are the pics...

  • Goot,

You were not born to late all of us wish we could have seen players before our time in my case. Ted Williams, Mays, Musial and so on. I did get to see Stargell Brett ,Ryan and many others as a kid. Some day kids will wish they got to see some of the players you are seeing today. Thanks for appreciating the game and its history. You and your dad are lucky to have each other.image

    Superb Don!

Ya know what I like - he didn't do a bad job signing on the ball - he coulda just scribbled something and ruined the ball - very nice bat also.

    Ya did good!

I'ld be happy to have Chipper on a card! I'm not sure what I have with Chipper? I'll have to check. I do have a GU bat of A. Jones, T. Glavine, a signed Jersey of A. Jones, auto ball of Glavine - GU jersey of R. Belliard - that's what I remember off the top of my head.

Thanx for sharing - I feel like I was there!

Makes me want to move back to FLA!!!!

    Amazing.........

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Thanks for all the comments guys. Sorry for not taking too many pics but like I said, I just felt like kicking back and enjoying my favorite team up close. I'm really happy with the Chipper autos, especially since I finally got to meet my HERO! Those memories will always be worth more to me than the autographs I got (and that's saying something since I've been wanting to get his auto for years now), the auto's will just serve as reminders to the memories (if that makes sense).

I'll probably take in a game tomorrow after church in the morning but I'm not sure which one. Most likely it'll be the Nationals vs. the Marlins down in Jupiter.

Time to go watch some BROOKLYN Dodgers and go to bed.
  • I went down to Marlins vs. Nationals in Jupiter. Not too many great autographs but a decent haul for not being overly assertive. Maybin's gonna be a stud too. I already have Dukes and Flores on the EXACT same cards but had doubles so figured why not get em again. I'll have pics up later once my grandparents leave.

  • I was sitting in 3rd period Law Studies today and received a text message from my Dad saying "You're checking out, call me when you leave school." I had no idea what was going on but was kinda worried. I called my dad and he told me that the company (General Electric) gave him 2 of their 6 Nationals spring training season tickets today and told him that it was "his turn". These aren't just any old tickets either, we're talking 2nd row behind the visiting dugout. Luckily the opponent today was none other than the Detroit Tigers! I met him at the stadium and made it there in time to score some sweeet autos!

    Not a bad view, huh?

The kid sitting on the right of the bench, next to the on deck circle is in my 1st period weightlifting class and is the bat boy for the Nationals. Other than the obvious perks, he is paid $50 as well as being tipped by the manager often, received 2 sets of Nationals Under Armour practice shirts and gets flown up to D.C. (plane tickets included) to be the bat boy for 1 series every summer!

You'll appreciate the Zimm Baseballfan.I'm going to hustle my butt out to the stadium after school on Thursday in hopes that Markakis will be there. Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about it.

What type of camera are you using?
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
