Hank Steinbrenner - a chip off the old block?

What he says about the upcoming season:

"The Yankees aren't about losing, I don't like losing, and the fans don't like losing... if
we miss the playoffs by the end of this year, I don't know how patient I'll be. But it
won't be against the players. It will be a matter of maybe certain people in the
organization could have done something else."

  • Its good to see that the "next generation" is just as quick tempered and irrational as daddy.

  • It may be just like dad, but with a team with the history, players and resources, how can anything else be acceptable.

Whether you like the Yanks or not, they want to do what every other team in the league wants to do: win. Sure they've had more payroll than every other team. But if you look at the last several years of payrolls, it's only been the last 4 or 5 where they've really distanced themselves from other teams. Not too long ago, the Braves, Red Sox, Dodgers, Tigers etc were a lot closer. And of course, look what their high payroll has gotten them the last 8 seasons. Too many early departures from the playoffs. So the rest of the league can have 2 laughs at the Yanks expense. 1. Thanks for the luxury tax payments that allow the teams (or in the worst possible case, the parent company) to show a profit, and 2. More teams have made it further in the playoffs and winning the word series while the hated Yankees sit at home and watch with the rest of us.

Steinbrenner has an opportunity, right now, to build the team with a better mix of farm and free agent talent than anytime in recent memory. The fact that they held onto their core while the Mets got Santana keeps this intact. I do wish he'd at least acknowledge that the pitching staff is way too old and ineffectual to compete during the whole season and keep a lid on it. Sure Chamberlain, Hughes and Kennedy might be the best they've got, but to expect 15-20 game winners out of them this season is a bit much.

  • George Steinbrenner bought the Yankees in the 70's, and is one heck of a businessman.
His investment has brought back excellent returns.
His charitable contributions and love for his country and team is nothing but respected by me.
George can take a bum rap, but his fans must love him.
Like softparade, I don't think Yankee fans would want it any other way, other then a Steinbrenner in control..
