Any hope for this 1888/7 indian??

Cherrypicked this SNOW-2 1888/7, photos taked in 10x and 60x. I had it in Olive Oil for 3 months, used a wood tooth pick to remove as much as possible. The cleaned it up with acetone, what would you guys do with/to it?

You can use a combination of sublimed (powdered) sulfur and vaseline to to tone it down to a near-normal brown copper color. This stuff is sold as "Deller's Darkener" but it's much cheaper to make your own.
  • Olive oil and mineral oil can take a year or more to work, at least that is my understanding, I would probably let it keep soaking. I have some copper soaking now just as a test, but your 3 months is longer than I have had mine in.

  • Anyone else, the coin is not cleaned, just the lighting.

Do you have a pic of the entire obverse? Your best bet might be to leave it as-is, if ANACS wasn't in such a state of flux I'd recommend having them certify it in a net-grade holder.

If you get it in a holder you should pop it in an auction. PCGS, NGC and ANACS all label these, PCGS as S-2 with the FS number, NGC as 1888/7 (which it is not).

This is a very scarce and interesting variety. Prior to 2000, it was known as 1888/7 die #2, but has since (in my mind at least) been relabeled to 1888/888, 1 in neck. It is an outstanding variety, regardless. Pricing this variety is difficult as past sales have been all over the map - partly because NGC mislabels these as 1888/7. A MS-64RB NGC coin sold for $23,575 in a Heritage auction (9/04:5262). An NGC AU-58 sold for $1,840 from David Lawrence (Richmond Collection 11/04:1030) An ANACS G-4 Cleaned sold for $2,990 in a Heritage sale (9/05:885).

So glad you frequent these boards, I would have never given a coin like this a second thought otherwise. image

Please post an obverse/reverse full coin shot of this... looks like a nice example.

Also, RICK SNOW, which TPG would you personally suggest is the best avenue to have one of these attributed through? And, do you have any idea of what the total number of these that have been graded is? Thanks ~
