55mm of German metal (NEWP: Sede Vacante medal)

This just arrived today and I am thrilled. Its a 1724 Sede Vacante medal from Hildesheim in Germany, located in Lower Saxony. The medal was minted to commemorate the Sede Vacante (empty seat) after the death of the Roman Catholic Bishop Joseph Clemens Kajetan Herzog von Bayern. The bishop was appointed in 1714 and died on December 11th 1723. His successor was appointed on Feb 5th 1724. The medal is 55mm in size, it weighs 43.6 g, and classified as Knyphausen 4581 / Zepernick 143. Although these medals are often referred to as "Schataulers", the medal was not struck to serve as official currency. This example would be considered a 1 1/2 sized "show taler".

Thanks all! I reshot the pics this morning in better light which gives it a more authentic and accurate representation.
  • Where do you people get these coins? My dealer never comes up with anything like this. Do I have to go to a bigger city? I am not confortable with buying through e-bay. But is the only way to get these marvelous pieces?

While my local dealer has been a wonderful source of support and education, my collecting interests just do not overlap with the coins he offers. I've had very limited success with local shows also. I do most of my searching through the internet since it is tough for me to attend the big shows here in the US. I have had some decent success through ebay, ma shops (german coin website), northeast numismatics, and some of the auction venues (heritage, goldberg). I have also found a few great coins through tips and advice from fellow forum members.

I understand your reluctance to buy on eBay, but I have generally been quite happy with the results. Most of the coins I buy via ebay are slabbed, and I generally keep an eye out for a handful of sellers that I have bought from in the past. A few of my mistakes generally could be traced back to the premise that "if its too good to be true, then it usually isn't.".

I found this particular medal on the german dealer kuenker's website (www.kuenker.de). It was priced a little above my typical range, but I justified the price with some good ebay results I had in December.
