Breaking the # 4 1963 Topps Baseball Set - guess the final total

If you check out Ebay, you will see that I have am in the process of breaking the # 4 Current Finest 1963 Topps Baseball set. The set has on overall GPA of 8.28 and consists of only PSA 8's, 9's, and 10's (no qualifiers). In most cases I went through multiple cards and always selected the best card. As a result many of the cards are high end for the grade.

Anybody care to guess what the break total will be for the set? Over the last two weeks I broke a similar 61 baseball set (8.28 overall) and it went for around $ 57 K.

  • SKINSFAN,

My tentative plan with the 63 football set is to consign it to one of the major auction houses and sell it as a complete set. Ideally, before I do that I would like to upgrade the three PSA 7's to 8's, however they happen to be very difficult cards to find: # 122 Ed Brown, # 123 JH Johnson, and # 167 Dick James.

  • Mike,

Any PSA 10's you have that I need that you'd sell me in the 1968 Topps Baseball? Also I need a PSA 9 #192 and PSA 9 Ryan in the 1968 Topps to go all PSA 9 or better for my set!

I'm #2 current finest on the 68 Topps Baseball Registry!

My e-mail is indicated there and or you can send me a PM via the message board.

Best of Luck with your set breaks!

You broke a 1961 Baseball set and realized about 57K? I was looking at an all 8 set on vcp and the break was about 29K. Did you have a lot of major stars in 9, it just seems like huge difference.

Wow, 4 PSA 10's in that 1963 set, and they are all POP 1's. Good Luck Mike.
  • jayhawke,

Yes, the 61 set had quite a few PSA 9 stars, and even a couple of 10's. I forgot to add up SMR on the set to see how that compared to the $ 57 K break price.

I'm guessing you'll pull right around $50K. SMR on the '63s is right around $47K depending on how you value the 10s. Nice start last night. I thought I'd be winning the Maris and got nosed out.

    Good Luck with the sales.

Oh, and how come nobody on that 63 T Football registry has one of the 4 PSA 9 Jim Marshall rc's? I have never seen that card and I've been looking for a LONG time.

    I'll guess my age times $1000 = $52,000

    Good Luck

  • All of the auctions through card # 360 have completed and the total is a little over $ 40 K so far. Thanks to all who have bid. The rest of the set is finishing this coming Tuesday and Wednesday.

    Mike

PS: I went ahead and deleted the set from the registry since a lot of people were wanting to add cards they won to their own set.

Are you going to be breaking your 66 set as well?
  • The final total was $ 71,520. Thanks to all who bid and won! Needless to say, I was very happy with the outcome. Keep your eyes out for my other 60's baseball sets.

    Very nice job mac.

when you say 'deleted' you mean retired?

    Good for you.

Great results! When does the 1969 set hit the 'Bay?
  • tyweb1,
The 66 set will eventually be broken but I'm not sure when on that one.

    WinPitcher,
Thanks! Yes, I meant "retired" when I said "deleted." If I remember right, after you reach a certain completion %, deleting a set will automatically place it on the retired list.

    gemint,
The 69 baseball set should auction (card by card again) in about a month and a half or two months from now.

    Thanks,
    Mike
