1998, A Season to remember.

What if 1998 never happened? I remember this season like it was yesterday, I cannot ever remember enjoying baseball as much as I did that year. Aside from the usual heartache my Red Sox brought to me, I always watched the Sox and their attempts at making a run but aside from that baseball in general was not ever as much fun watching Big Mac crushing HR's along with Sosa that year. What if the steroid issue was never brought up? I understand now more than ever that these guys "cheated" the game and its fabled records have fallen and are now forever tarnished by Bonds ect.. but do you remember the game 10 years ago? Can anyone say they didnt get a thrill out of that season of 1998? I know I did.

It was certainly exciting, but honestly, I recall thinking that the record must not be as impressive as I had always thought, since not one, but two, players were going to shatter it in the same season. From that standpoint, it was almost overkill, IMO. It was also a matter of time before the record would fall as both Griffey and McGwire had come very close to breaking it the previous season.

    Ahhhhhh 125-50, good times image
  • i was more impressed when cal broke gherigs streak, then lapped the field.

meant more to me than having TWO players break the single season HR record in the same season. At the time it seemed a bit hollow, and in retrospect I'm glad these clowns will be seen as cheaters.
  • It was easily among the top five most memorable, historic, and exciting years in baseball history. The only other full seasons I can think of being on par with 1998 was the Black Sox Scandle, and Ruth and then Maris' HR record seasons.

The 1998 baseball season is the one that really got me interested in baseball again after 4 years of basically not giving a damn about the sportimageimage
