For those of you tired of hearing about greedy athletes and cheating...

Fans tired of greedy athletes (see Latrell Sprewell and his infamous "I've got my family to feed" attitude when he passed on $21 million a few years back) should look to guys like Ryan Braun for inspiration.

These are the stories that have been getting drowned out by stories of repossessed homes, steroid use, dogfighting and videotaping scandals.

Braun donates rookie of year bonus

There is still a bit of class in sports. It's just harder to find it these days.

Comments

  • thats pretty cool. I hate athletes that want more money than they know what to do with, more or less more than they are worth.

Dude, lol, if it wasn't for the hilarity of your Larry icon making me laugh everytime you post, I'd tell you to stop "posting the kool-aid."

Ryan Braun seems like a class act and still humble. Hopefully he doesn't change if he continues to see the success that he had last year.

nobody-i repeat nobody-has done what pat tillman did. gave up millions and sadly his life.

ryan braun is a nice story, pat tillman was a one out a million athlete and human being. many volunteer for the army, but few if any gave up career wise, financial wise and comfort wise what he did.

There were many WWII and Korean war athletes that served in those wars. Most were drafted, but there were also many that volunteered. The only difference is they wer not making mucho $ in the 40s and 50s.

Ted Williams is probably the most famous.

You're correct. We should all refrain from posting stories such as these since they are not up to par with the sacrifice of one.

    My mistake.
  • great story.

Too bad tillmans death/cover up etc. and ultimate sacrafice were wasted on a bunch of propaganda
  • It would be easier if we could get people like Dan Wetzel to shut his pompous mouth. Who gives these people jobs anyway? The media can go to hell. I don't even like Clemens and the way Wetzel goes for his jugular is just plain wrong. What scum we have in the media, always making every story sensational and selling each other out. I really think "reporters" like him are almost as bad as lawyers. But yes, athletes need to get themselves in gear.

    Roger Clemens Foundation

The Roger Clemens Foundation is an entity dedicated to helping children. It was established in 1992 by Roger and Debbie Clemens in order to ensure that funds raised by the Foundation through golf tournaments, silent auctions and other events, would be properly distributed to the charities and organizations that they have committed to support.

The Foundation exists for the purpose of carrying on and supporting educational, charitable, literary, scientific and religious activities for children, with a special emphasis on underprivileged and at-risk children, and children with special needs.

Among the numerous organizations that The Roger Clemens Foundation has supported are: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Variety Clubs International, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Make A Wish Foundation, The Jimmy Fund, Sunshine Kids, Periwinkle Foundation, and the National Paralysis Foundation, Starlight Children's Fund of Canada.

The Foundation has also provided either ongoing or one-time support to a number of local organizations benefiting children in Texas and the Houston area: Spring Branch Education Foundation, Paws For A Cause, Initiatives For Children, Arbor House Preschool, St. Francis Episcopal School, Bunker Hill Elementary School, Memorial Drive Elementary School, Memorial High School, Spring Woods High School, Boys and Girls Clubs of Houston, the Texas Chapter of Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association (DEBRA), Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Support has also been provided through the years for numerous organizations in Boston, Toronto and New York.

There are many organizations that Roger has supported and continues to support since the Foundation's inception through donation of memorabilia for auction, and with gifts and personal appearances in hospitals and shelters. Among these in the Houston, Texas area are the Star of Hope Family & Children's Center, Texas Children's Hospital, and the Mission of Yahweh Women's and Children's Center. Roger and Debbie also donate their time by participating in special charity events.

The Roger Clemens Foundation is the realization of a dream Roger had early in his career to help fulfill the needs, ease the suffering, and encourage and support children from all walks of life. In doing so, he and Debbie have been and continue to be able to give back to their community by sharing a portion of their success through the efforts of the Roger Clemens Foundation.

i know your whole revolves around wisconsin teams but Tillman turned down a contract offer of $3.6 million over three years from the Cardinals to enlist in the U.S. Army.

the $10,000 that your boy is giving up chump change is compared to that and when he wants to suit up and go off to some God forsaken land to help keep us free and ultimately pay the price of his life i'll post a story about him.

just to keep things in perspective warrick dunn has raised over $5,000,000 for single mothers to build homes. you may have heard from him since his home fans don't where dairy products on their heads.

if braun were really a hero he would have done it anonymously. Read Matthew 6:1-2 if you need more on that topic.

The young man did a good thing to help his fellow man. I do not know if he was blowing a trumpet to be sure all knew he was a great guy. I think he probably had the best of intentions. There are many reasons to make donations like these public. For one it is a fine example and motivates others to also be generous. There is no need to belittle good deeds compared to others good deeds. Jesus was approving of the lady who gave very little but had little as it was a sacrifice to her. If one believes in Jesus sacrifice then any good deed anyone does does not amount to a hill of beans compared to his.

I also forgot to mention that my Dad and some of his coworkers at General Electric went over and helped build the new center that is mentioned in the article. He said that Mr. Wakefield was there the whole time and was helping install windows and flooring. No cameras watching, no media around, he did it just because he wanted to help out even though I'm sure no one would've complained if he had just watched.

Thats a great article on Wakefield, good to read that about a Sox player! He is right ( I hope ) that alot of that stuff goes unoticed, unfortunately we mostly hear of the bad things.

I haven't heard from him personally, but I've heard about the great things he does including building homes for families in need. He, too, is a great man.

I was not here saying "my boy" is better than whoever your boy or boys are. I was just pointing out a local story about a player on a small market club who donated his bonus to a charity. Anonymous, public or otherwise, the money spends the same way.

I'm sorry my posts make you reply like a childish fool.

Dude, lighten up a little. The OP was just posting a positive sports story about a favorite player who helped someone. That hardly justifies the comparison and ultimate bashing of his story with one of someone who did something else selfless. There obviously is no comparison with what Braun did vs. Tillman. So why compare? Not to mention, if you feel so strongly about it, why don't you make your own post about Tillman? I'll tell you why, cuz it happend awhile ago and everybody knows about it already (and yes, we do still recognize the sacrifice).

Alrighty Carol, I 'm calling you out. I can't recall who started the political thread a few days back that "you" decided to delete, yet this thread not only contains political comments but religious comments as well. I have no problem with either of them on this board. So either you let these threads all stand or delete them. Just make up your mind!!

Sorry stown, i know what high regards you have for Carol, but i'm getting real tired of "subjective" deleting of threads.

This thread isn't ABOUT politics or religion. It's ABOUT a player that donated his ROY bonus. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you don't like how Carol monitors the boards, buy your own webspace and start your own message board. Anything short of that and you can kindly pipe down and move on.
  • Thanks for sharing the story gumbyfan, it is nice to hear that the young players coming up are willing to put in an effort to help clean up the sport.
