New 8 Reales for 2008. Opinions wanted

I finally got around to taking pictures of my new 2008 purchases and I wanted some opinions on a few of them. Please forgive my crappy photo taking skills. I have a skinny Nikon and I took them by hand with crappy lighting.

The first of the bunch is a 1820 Lima Peru 8 Reales. It looks and feels authentic but the weight is abit off. It weighs 27.5 Grams but it has the correct breaks in edge and crazy amount of lustre. Also silver in parts of the portrait and the crown in the back is missing, I dont know if it pre or post mint damage.

The second coin is a 1813 8 Reales from Lima Peru again. I was wondering if that planchet flaw is post or pre mint?

The third coin is a 1809 Mexico. On the Obverse at 1 o'clock, is that dirty die from the mint or is it post mint corrosion?

The fourth is an 1807 Mexico. Is that a die crack on the Obverse, running down the "Gratia"? This one was hard to picture because it has strange proof like surface. I've never seen this type of surface on Reale before. It also has a very weak strike but I don't think it's counterfeit. The edges are correct and it weighs out correctly.

The fifth and final one is a 1800 Mexico. I was wondering if the scratch on the reverse next to the right pillar is post or pre mint?

Thanks everyone.

Having issues with getting the images display at work, I'll take a look once I'm home. Sounds like an interesting bunch, though.

    Neat bunch.

First piece is pretty overweight. If original, I'm surprised it made it out of the mint. However, if the planchet was that much heavier, it was most likely adjusted (filed) and the resulting tapering of the planchet at 12 o'clock could be responsible for the weakness of strike.

The 1813 is gorgeous! My favorite of the bunch. Looks MS, to me, but the planchet flaw will definitely detract from the grade if you send it to PCGS.

1809 - hard to tell from the pictures what exactly is the cause of the defect. I would lean more towards post-mint corrosion, though.

1807 is interesting. You mentioned that the edge is correct - are overlaps there? I've handled a few very impressive counterfeits last year where the surfaces were proof-like and the edge was flawless (in fact - too perfect without any overlaps).

1800 is another nice piece. The damage on the reverse looks like a "struck-through". If you have a powerful magnifier, you can check the edges of it. If it was a post-mint scratch, the edges will be a little raised, while in a mint strike-through the edges of the "cut" are level with the surface.

Not a bad way to start a year image Grats!

    OOOPS I made a mistake, the 1820 weighs 26.5 not 27.5. LOL
The planchet flaw in 1813 is post mint or happened during mint?
    Thanks for the feedback.

I'll check the overlap on the 1807 and take some pictures to show.
I bought it from Cayon, but I dont know how reliable they are.

If it's from Cayon - should be O.K. Their experience is quite vast when it comes to pieces of 8, from what I understand.
  • I agree with koinkat, I love the 1800........... It should grade pretty high.
