usually in your ebay messages inbox, or on the front page of ebay. On a side note, after PSA announced half grades, then a couple weeks later, ebay does some fee percentage increases, how many people on these boards do you think took a header off a building? Oh and then we have the tri-fecta of the USPS increasing postage. Man, if I were a generally stressed person to begin with, that would have sealed the deal, lol.

  • What I don't get is that if you start your auctions with a minimal opening bid, you'll only be charged .20 anyways. I think if you have confidence in your cards, there's no reason to start off with a higher minimum bid.

then what is the problem? I can think of a few reasons, one most notably a card not selling for its true value.

If you think the cards will ultimatly reach what they should, why worry if a seller starts them
at what he feels comfortable with? I think that sellers that start cards at true value or just below
are just minimizing ridiculous bids. Those bottom feeders are the ones that get pushed out.

The days of starting cards at .99 were over long ago.

Just as bidders strategies changed over time so did sellers.

Confidence in your cards has nothing to do with it, getting fair value is what is important.

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • I respect what you say, but who cares how many low bids a card gets? Some people just like to bid. Why deny them the fun? If you have a strong card, chances are the bidding will hit where the card should be more often than not. I've started every one of my auctions off at the year of issue (.57) and I have yet to have a dud auction. Plus, more bids make a card look like a hotter commodity.
  • Until you have a card that falls through the cracks and sells for 1/2 its value.
  • That's why I reach out to my vintage card buying bretheren. I do understand. I just haven't had any problems lately. Maybe if I was selling more common modern stuff (which I will be selling deeper into the season), I might reconsider my position and start with higher opening bids.
  • It's tough to wade through the influx of new cards listed....

My first reason, yet you decided to rebut my thought about ridiculous bids.

    Ridiculous.

One of my usual vintage searches on pre-1930 cards typically yields about 2000 items returned.

After dump days, it returns around 8,000 - 10,000 items.

Now, after this week's dump day, I have just over 5,000 items returned.

So I think some people really may have bought in to the boycott for this week.

Either that, or Levi forgot to post his 3,000 - 5,000 listings this time around.
  • Easy my brother, Steve. From my experience of successful bidding/auction watching/Ebay selling, I've found that cards listed with minimum bids close to, slightly below or slightly above a reasonable price for the issue/grade generally receive fewer bids and rarely exceed an average price. They might fetch that average acceptable price, but they're not blowing up by any means...unless it's a super scarce card. There's something to be said for trying to attract as many watchers as possible and then riding the bidding momentum into an above average price. As a bidder, I always liked to see cards with minimum bids close to an average price. Those cards rarely ended up with a lot of bidders and higher prices. I bought a few thousand cards on Ebay, so I think I'm fairly tuned into bidding practices.

Great, then you can list your cards and start them at .99 or .57 or whatever works for you.

I too feel I am in tune ,and I start mine at what I want for the card.

    Steve
    Good for you.

Steve, you know I love you man but I disagree with the statement that minimum starters are being pushed out. I sold half of my 1957 set (PSA 7 and 8) with most cards starting at 0.99 and they nearly ALL went for a profit (I averaged between 25-35% all told). A lot of action on those cards, just letting bidders do what they like to do (as well as the sniper too). I would not dream of putting up a vintage common for more than 0.99. Even on stars, I do not start them more than 9.99 and again, saw a whole bunch of great action on those cards.

I did not say that. I said minimum bidders, they could be pushed out if items are started at true value.

Example: A 1965 Topps card in PSA 9 started at 49.99, the people that usually bid up to and including 5.00 are left out? Yes?

    I think you misunderstood me.

    Steve

    Good for you.

NP buddy, lol I had to go back and check and see if I did in fact say what i thought I had, been a long week for me too. Hope you feel better soon.

The bottom line here is each seller can do what he feels comfortable with.

I rather not play the .99 game at this time.

It depends on the card of course. A PSA Mantle I may start at .99 cuz I know it will reach its value, a PSA 9 of a common, one in which i have some dough into I'll start closer to what I have into it.

As Ebay bidders strategies changed so did the sellers.

    Steve
